We were lucky to catch up with Nametag Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nametag, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to start over today, knowing everything I already know, I would do way less overthinking. Oftentimes, overthinking caused me to get in my own way, and that’s never healthy for anything creatively.
Nametag, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Nametag Alexander, a Father, Emcee, Songwriter, Podcaster, and creator of the Lead And Be Legendary imprint. I got into creating music from being heavily influenced by my family’s involvement in the music business. That, and growing up being surrounded by their passion for music, I naturally gravitated towards it, honing my skills as an Emcee and Songwriter.
Now with podcasting, my fascination for it started in 2016 and it led me to venture into that field too. I might legit be a podcast junkie, I recognized the power to connect through podcasting. I developed two shows. First, the LABL Podcast, which then became what’s now known as “A Nametag Is Necessary”, and “Marvel Of The Minds” with co host and Music Producer, Peace Of Minds. where I could share my insights and engage with listeners on a deeper level. It’s a dope journey for sure.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember in early 2016, being uncertain of if it’d be received well if I started Podcasting on top of already being a Songwriter and Recording Artist. It was a slight pivot, because my game plan was never to fully move onto the podcast space, but to do both music and podcasting. It was a bit of uncertainty because it can be easy for folks can put you in a box and only see you as doing the thing they originally know you for. However, I proved otherwise.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’d say that consistency and quality helped build my reputation.
