We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nakita Poleon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nakita, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Almost near the big 3 0, i honestly wished i started my creative career sooner. i have let not being the standard female artist in Hip Hop deter me from pursuing this path earlier, but sometimes you have to be the start of change so others see you be the representation they always needed. I’ve always knew music would be a part of me, growing up being the kid to bring the CD”s/music to middle school parties rather than food or rapping random freestyles with my best friend in high school in my moms car while we drove around. i started as a producer in 2012 at 19, creating beats, going to college, teaching summer camp kids, and using my free time to work with other independent artists, by 2015 my beats and producer credits gotten as far as Japan, The UK, Jamaica, and Canada but i never felt like it was enough for me and ended up taking a hiatus from music. Near the end of 2018 i made the decision to become an independent artist, which wasn’t an easy start since so many knew me for my beat production they cared little for me transitioning into a lane/venture. Even though the start was hard i can say now that i’m loving this new career path, my new sound and even had Michael Blackson hear one of my freestyles from a mutual friend and he thought it was fire, so i know my talent is something i can be proud of. Honestly starting earlier would of given me more time to feel comfortable in this creative space and more confident. In the end i wouldn’t ask for anything to be different because everything in life is a lesson to be learned and to grow from it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nakita Poleon aka Kita on Tha Track, Born and raised in the Virgin Islands and i am a 29 year old Independent Artist and Producer. From a very young age music has always been apart of me, my father side of the family especially has a line of DJ’s, Producers, and even great Violinist like my great uncle Rameau Poleon who was recognized for his work through out the Caribbean and his home island St. Lucia. i started really getting into music during high school as a way to express my feelings, being a Lesbian, not being out that time, and having difficulty expressing that music was my escape and it sort of blossomed from there. What i think i set me apart from others is my ability to work with any genre of music not only Hip Hop which is how i started but being able to make something amazing with Pop, R&B, Reggae, Afro Beat, you name it, i can do it or certainly master it. Also being able to write about anything is a pretty amazing feeling as well, if you want me to rap about a mango then done, a groovy song about a mango is coming your way! i am honestly most proud of the growth I’ve seen within myself doing music, you would think being an introverted socially anxious queer would steer me away from this path of being in the spotlight but it’s given me the confidence i never thought i would have, the ability to get to the point of what i need done without awkwardly over explaining myself in a sense of needing to please others, and just being the super smiley, goofy friend that’s down to do good music and collaborate with anyone who is down to create something special. the main thing i want potential fans/followers to know about me and the brand i’m starting to create is that the journey with me is gonna be a crazy ride but if you’re all about being in your feels and expressing who you are without regret then let’s do it together and rock out!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The particular goal or mission driving my creative journey is just simply wanting to inspire and bring out emotions of anyone who listens to my music whether it’s love, happiness, joy or even hate. i feel like good or bad everything is a driving force to inspire someone to get something started and i don’t mind being that. You hate this particular track or song i did and know you can do better with it, do it, The album i created made you figure out what path you want to take in life, do it, The music video i posted gave you an idea of what to do at your next shoot, do it. Nike said it best “Just Do It”. (Not a sponsored ad.)
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I remember scrolling through Tik Tok because who doesn’t nowadays, technology and social media right? i came across this guy explaining the origins of how The Simpsons started, their first episodes/animations where nothing like how it is now and ending with the saying “Persistent Perfection Prevents Production” and it changed my way thinking. Every journey begins with one step and sometimes where so consumed with it being perfect, it tends to never see the light of day and then the what if’s starts rolling it and the constant doubts starts getting at your anxiety. good or bad, prefect or not just start with that first step!
