We were lucky to catch up with Nakita Gee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nakita, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
For years I was in club promotions and assisting a few small businesses with flyers and web design. Over some time I became the go to person for a lot of individuals looking for information on how to set up their business. I used to ask them why they chose to come to me and they would always tell me, because I knew a lot of different people to get a job done. So, soon after I kept battling on how I could set up a business to give these business owners a one stop shop team. It took me 5 years to finally put together a strategy on how to help all small business owners. I remember the night I sat at my cousins house and cried for hours trying to really put a business plan together that would be affordable and quality. Literally 24 hours after I had a plan and it was a feeling that I will never forget. I couldn’t believe I was really doing it. I met with a few people I knew and built my team within 3 weeks. Ever since then I have been perfecting my process, structuring my team, and helping small business owners bring their vision to life. I truly believe that you should never give up on your calling, you never know what God has waiting for you behind the next door.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sure, I am Nakita, but most people call me Kita. I began working in marketing and promotions now 13 years ago while I was in college. I have over 7 years of sales experience along with my promotions and marketing experience. I took my experience and curated an agency to be able to provide small business owners an all inclusive stop for their marketing and branding needs. My goal was to stay affordable, but provide them with quality visuals and expertise. So many individuals spend a lot of time outsourcing services to build their business among many different teams. However, with One Look Marketing, they are able to get everything they need to jump start their business with one team and one project manager through the entire duration of their project. I am most proud that my team is very unique and most importantly we are a great mixture of very talented minorities. My clients look forward to an organized, stress-free, and family oriented experience when they work with me. The ultimate goal is to provide them with a memorable experience and alleviate all stress from them to execute the brand of their dreams.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I had a really big turning point right after my first year in business that changed my outlook on how I should operate and how I could continue to push through adversity. When I began business I worked with a lot of my former classmates from college who were just jump starting their businesses. I would make little to no profit strictly because I wanted to see them win and build my team’s portfolio. I had one experience that almost made me give up and forget what my heart wanted to do. This client booked my visuals team for their product launch. During this project I broke my ankle, but still found a way to get this job done and support my clients dream. Well, this gesture easily took a turn when the client didn’t like anything that was presented to them. I tried every avenue to reconcile and make things right and the client even agreed to finalize the project and apologized for all of the trials we were encountering. However, after all of that they ended up disputing payment and stated they never received the service or visuals. A few days later they were using those same visuals that they stated they didn’t like on all platforms, but had received a full refund through the third party payer. I hired legal representation to cease and desist, but that was completely disregarded. I received death threats and several harassing messages from this client after they received the cease and desist. I literally just felt defeated and thought if someone I had known for years could do this to me, what would a stranger do. I took a break from my business to think if this is something I wanted to continue doing. It wasn’t until someone who really wanted to work with me an my team said some really encouraging words for me not to quit that pushed me to fix my structure. So, 1 year later I am fully restructured my team is solid, and I now have things in place to never encounter that situation again. They hoped for my failure, but God gave me the strength to push forward. Business isn’t easy, and your services or products may not be for everyone, but never give up when you are going through the rough times. I am so happy to say I endured that, because it made me stronger.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I began my business I was super frugal and didn’t really want to put up a lot of money to invest in my brand. However, I quickly realized I am only one person and it is only so much I can do myself. As well as, there is only so much that google could teach you. So, I quickly had to change my focus because what I was doing clearly wasn’t working and I realized I needed help. I researched and searched for a great business coach, business strategist, and business bestie! I found a great women’s community and business coach with Brown Girl Biz World, lead by Isis. This group really set the tone for how I needed to structure my business. I then teamed up with one of the best business strategists ever, Krystal Beachum, to help me put everything in order, set a plan, and map out why I am an expert in my field. Lastly, my business bestie, Janeisha, helped hold me accountable to ensure we both met the goals for this year. I am super great full for them because they helped set the tone and helped pivot me in the right direction for success in my business.
