We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nakia Prince. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nakia below.
Alright, Nakia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My first job as an RN was one of the best jobs a new nurse could have! I graduated in Spring 2013 with hopes of working a job that had a good manager, staff and obtain a preceptor that was passionate and patient with new grads. I didn’t know exactly where I wanted to work but I knew it wasn’t the ER or ICU, but something in between. Well, I did just that, my very 1st interview was on a 48 bed CVICU Stepdown floor. I was already familiar with the manager and staff since I completed clinicals there. I knew this was where I needed to be! I stayed there on nightshift for 2 years, and it was the greatest experience for me as a new grad. Although I was challenged for many days to the point I wanted to cry and go home, I never gave up on my dream of becoming a great nurse. Those challenging moments made me into the nurse I am today!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello my name is Nakia Prince. I am wife, mother, registered nurse, and nurse mentor. My passion for nursing began as a kid as I saw my mom working as a nurse. I was inspired by her love and compassion as she shared stories about how she cared for her patients each day. I was also inspired to help people who were sick and couldn’t do much for themselves. My passion grew as I became an adult. Now in 2025 I have been a nurse for 12 years! My love for the nursing industry has inspired me start a mentorship for future nurses (nursing students and aspiring nurses).
This mentorship will help provide empowerment to those on their nursing journey through individual mentorship, tutoring and other resources provided. The goal is to help combat the nursing shortage and help empower future nurses to join and stay in the nursing industry. I recently published a book called, The Ultimate Nursing Mentorship Guide: Empowering Your Nursing Journey. This book will help aspiring nurses before, during and after nursing school, I am excited to be given the opportunity to make an impact in my profession.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could choose my career again, I’d still choose nursing—without hesitation.
Nursing isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling. From day one, I knew I wanted to make a real difference, and this career has given me that and more. Whether it’s comforting a patient, mentoring future nurses, or advocating for better healthcare, the impact is profound.
The challenges are real, but the rewards are greater. Nursing has shaped me, given me purpose, and allowed me to uplift others. I’m proud to be part of a profession built on compassion, resilience, and service.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
To be successful as a nurse, you need a combination of skills and traits. I believe the most successful trait is the willingness to always learn and grow. That is very important as the nursing industry is always evolving as technology increases and research brings more effective results for patient care.
Nursing never stops evolving.
