Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nakeya Samuels. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nakeya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
N Sam Solutions is taken from my first and last name. I wanted to be in the mix! Also, I knew I wanted to have solutions for different industries, so I just added that. My company’s name does not have a real meaning behind it, but as the years went on, it gained its purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My business model is “We meet you where your business have a need …”
I have this model because I do not want to be boxed in to one industry or specialty and that is what sets me apart from other consultants. My team and I have assisted many business on the following:
Project Management
Marketing, advertising and Social Media Consulting
Staffing
Event Management
Business Operations Management
Career and Professional Development
What my team and I are most proud of is our recent expansion in Career and Professional Development. We have partnered with The Cooperative Opportunity Project on their Virtual After School Program and Volunteers of America with their transitional residents. We taught varied demographics on resume writing, career research and setting goals. Our goal is to speak on panels to a greater audience on how to transition our youth and at risk population to careers before they transition to college. We are providing them with the foundation they need before they consult the Career Center within their Colleges/Universities/ Trade School.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
All projects are not worth your time or money! When you first start out, you are hungry to prove your self and what you can do. However, you do not have to be aligned with all projects to make a name for yourself. I to turn down a contract because it did not align with my company’s goals and vision. We are slowly making a name for ourselves, but Rome was not built in one day! I am surrounded by amazing business owners who always mentor me directly and indirectly. One person said, “all money is not good money” and I have heard that many times personally and professionally. However, I only understood this saying when I leaped into growing my business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Networking! This was something I was AFRAID of doing. Selling myself?! Why? I have an amazing personality(to me), why do I have to network?
I had to have a long talk within myself and figure out what I was really scared of. I started doing things to step outside the box. I have gone to events alone, but not to network. Now, I purposely attend events alone or with clients to network. One of my most recent event that I attended with a client, I decided to take a chance and pitch my Career Professional Development course. That push allowed me to teach a two week course with Volunteers of America residents. Since then, we have had many partnership with them.
