We were lucky to catch up with Naiomi Sounds recently and have shared our conversation below.
Naiomi, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is an EP that I released titled “Floating On Earth”. This collection of tracks is very special to me and marks a unique moment in my evolution. When writing these songs, my intention was to process the difficult things that I was dealing with in my life as well as manifest the new life I was wanting to call in. I speak about the beauty and the pain that love has brought me as well as the intricacies of my journey back to self love. This EP means a lot to me because through creating it, I brought healing into my life. Then as I healed, I grew strong enough to pass along the messages and lessons i’ve discovered to others who may need the help. I feel lucky getting to witness my creations reach other people who want to gain their confidence back, come home to themselves or just feel good. As time continues on, having music etched into history with my name on it continues to feel so aligned. Re listening to my music during different times of my life helps me in multiple ways every time I turn to it for guidance. It shows me where I was, where I am, and where I can go. It shows me the ground beneath my feet. Music has always saved my life.

Naiomi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Naiomi Sounds and I am a San Diego based Artist/Singer/Songwriter. I have been involved with music and creativity for my entire life, although it wasn’t until the pandemic that I first started releasing my original music professionally. Not only do I make music but I also have a degree in Child and Family Development and I work with children. To me it all feels connected. Working with children encourages me to tap into the creative realm, think outside the box and push past my fears. By being the type of person who does that I can then provide them with the support, guidance, and care that they need. I support myself financially this way and am grateful for the growth I feel by spending my days with children. This allows my music to remain special and something that integrates naturally with the ebbs and flows of my life. I am so proud of myself for all the years of studying, hands on experience, writing, and learning that I did, because now those seeds have blossomed and my life can exist in balance where I get to do all of the things I love. I want people to know that they are infinitely loved, can access so much power and strength within them at all times, and that being vulnerable is a superpower.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the art that you channel. In a way, I am witnessing my art for the first time each time it is created because one moment it was floating in the cosmos and the next it was right there in my physical reality. The way I view my art is that I am the vessel that it travels through to then essentially be born as a creation. So when I am making art, I am really creating a space or environment in which my mind can channel the creativity surrounding me and turn it into something tangible. My intention is simply to create and I trust wherever my soul guides me. I believe we are all creative simply being human and that the key is to learn how to open up our own channel to the divine to see what emerges. As someone who has been creating my entire life, I am becoming a master at opening up my creative channel. As long as I can do that, my thoughts will process, my emotions will come and go and when a cute little baby idea is ready to become tangible, it will go right for that big open channel i’ve been meditating on and putting in the work to maintain access to. You can never predict the timing of life, but you can always prepare yourself for the moments that give you the opportunities you’ve been calling in. When you’re ready, the universe knows.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the lesson that people will treat you with kindness if you are kind to them. That is not always the case, but through life experience, and internal reflection I have learned that people will treat me exactly as they are, and that my boundaries are not requests but requirements for being in my life. This lesson was difficult to learn because sometimes people can be both kind and disrespectful at the same time. This is where I had to dig deep and really figure out what type of people I wanted to have my energy around. Now that I know how to protect it, I can guard myself from people who have bad intentions and gravitate toward the connections that have my best interest at heart.
