Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nailah Underwood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nailah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name of my business by pondering on the very essence of what I wanted my business to be. I believe that the name Time Capsule encompasses the very nature of my mission: providing runway, archival, and vintage designer clothing. With each order my clients are receiving their very own ‘Time Capsule’ of curated vintage pieces, taking them back to a specific era, runway show, or trend within the fashion industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nailah Underwood. I am currently in my last year of law school and also operate a small business. My business, Time Capsule, is an online marketplace consisting of curated archival, runway, and vintage designer clothing. I have always had a love for fashion and decided to start my business in 2022 after sitting on the idea for quite some time. As an aspiring fashion law attorney, I believe that Time Capsule gives me an entrepreneurial perspective that could be very beneficial once I begin practicing. I provide vintage designer pieces at an affordable price point; items that you will not find in the store. Time Capsule allows clients to shop sustainably and add distinctive items to elevate their wardrobe. My knowledge of fashion history and my ability to source unique pieces has allowed me to stand out from similar businesses. My biggest challenge has been staying consistent with my business while also balancing the rigorous law school curriculum. Time management and staying grounded have been major factors in my ability to excel in both, but there are many business goals that I am still progressing towards.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been physical marketplaces such as pop up shops or markets that allow me to interact and showcase my collection of vintage pieces. I believe that the connection I can make with clients in person is deeper than through online platforms. Many clients who purchase from me in person end up following my social media pages which also helps my business expand.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I really enjoyed reading The LegaliTEAS of Entrepreneurship by Lisa Bonner. It provided first-hand insight into every aspect of becoming and entrepreneur and creating a successful business. I highly recommend for business owners or even those who just want a better understanding of what entrepreneurship entails.
