We recently connected with Nailah Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Nailah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
I’ve currently reached a place where I am starting over. My first step is getting my personal finances in order. So that once I do start to reach my goals in my career I can separate business finances from personal. In my first attempt I tried to do that but I lost my way and my focus. I’m deciding to be patient with myself and take my time to figure out what will work best for me. However over trial and error I’ve learned spending habits are important to manage. The habits you create are the ones that continue through out your journey. I’m pumping the breaks and taking a good look at what I’m doing and how I intend to successfully move forward.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I define myself as a licensed cosmetologist because I love every aspect of the beauty industry. I started out with my love for makeup artistry. I love making others feel good about themselves and enhance the beautiful features they already have. I specialize in natural makeup and event makeup.I’m also a hairstylist however my journey as a colorist has been my favorite part. I specialize in blowouts on all textures of hair from all walks of life, hair color services and cutting. I am also a nail technician and I’ve learned so much from different salons I’ve worked. That’s still a skill I am perfecting not a service I am currently offering. The one thing I haven’t done professionally is esthetician work. You may wonder why not just pick one and stick to it. The honest answer is doing it all is very thrilling to me. The ideals and business plan that I have entails it all. I can not stop until I see my goal’s come to fruition. I can not spill all of my plans but first step is financial literacy. The next is building a consistent clientele bouncing around to different salons has made that a challenge for me. I plan to no longer depend on the running of someone else’s business and take charge of my own. I understand that this may take time but I’m in it for the long haul and I will continue to be patient with myself. I will say I do need your support book me as your makeup artist and hairstylist. That’s what will ultimately help grow my business is the support of you all.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Overtime I’ve become antisocial and that’s something I’m unlearning. I could say it was due to the few years we all had lifestyle changes from world events. I don’t know exactly where it’s stemming from but I do know it won’t help me grow my business. Sometimes staying to yourself keeps you out of trouble but staying to yourself too much means you are not engaging with your peers.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Starting over after 2 years of lock downs has been such a challenge . I have been able to work as a hairstylist and nail tech in other salons. While also working other jobs to maintain. I’ve done a few makeup clients. Honestly the only resilience is from spirit to never give up. I will say I take full responsibility for not being as consistent as I should in the promotion of my services.
