We recently connected with Naijja Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Naijja , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
Good customer service will always take your business a long way. In the hair industry I have learned that yes although we are business owners sometimes we are also therapist or even something close to hair doctors. You never know what a client may be going through personally and how by simply doing a great service on them may make them feel better about their personal issues. For example, a client who has medical hair loss issues may really need a wig or hair style that uplifts and gives them confidence. Most people wear wigs as an option but for others it can be a requirement in order to feel beautiful again and restore the happiness they feel they may have lost. Appearance is a major thing for a woman it’s a big part of who we are and also apart of our self love. When working with clients with medical conditions it’s so rewarding to bring joy back into peoples lives especially seeing their smiles it just lights up the room. My advice to any business is to always put customer service first! It won’t always be fair and sometimes you may not understand what the client is going through until you speak with them but that is why it’s our jobs to also realize they’re human and sometimes need compassion. Always remember customer service is key and will set the tone and give a great reputation to your business.

Naijja , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
While in college back in 2015 I began to make wigs for myself. During college is the time of struggle but as a woman of course we want to always be cute and presentable! It started off as a way to help myself look my best and turned into more of a passion for myself. I began to do it over the years and slowly began to take actual classes to better myself and truly learn more on the hair industry. Slowly I began to do research and test hair for my own vendors and after that once covid hit I had to tap into my talents and passion. I had a great support system and from there on it because history.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When it comes to building my Clientele it’s something I am still working on but Facebook has became my biggest platform! Posting everyday and constantly promoting your brand is key! I have learned even when you don’t have the most followers word of mouth is the biggest form of marketing. When you stay consistent and just be who you’re at all times be relatable and show your personality and it truly will take you a long way. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone
