We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nai Shobowale . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nai below.
Hi Nai , thanks for joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Right after my engagement I realized I had no married friends. All I could remember are the words from my mentor “find a need in the community and fill it”. I knew that most African American children grow up in single parent households but never wondered why. I felt that if I can provide a safe space to provide the example of two parent homes, it would make a difference.
Nai , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! I am Nai Shobowale, pizza crust advocate and CEO & Founder of The Black Marriage Club. One of the nations largest marriage social club, providing the resources and support for black marriages to thrive. The host of the largest black marriage conferences, retreats, and social events.

Problem:
According to the census, almost 70% of black women and men are unmarried. Although we embraced our single life, we ran into one problem when we got married. We didn’t have many married friends. It was hard to find friends that we could be transparent with and understood journey of being newleyweds. Oh to be young, black and married!
Solution:
After a double date with another married couple, The Black Marriage Club was born. From our curated date nights, winning wives brunches or couples retreats, we’ve got you covered. Moving to establish chapters nationwide, there are many perks to being a member of this elite social club.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I started Black Marriage Club, I hosted a wives event. No one showed up but myself and two therapist. I was so discouraged but I did not allow that to stop me. Full circle and two years later, I am now a keynote speaker at a nation conference hosted by those same two therapist. Speaking to hundreds of people about the importance of community building.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn poor time management. Opportunities have been truly missed when I didnt maximize my time. I also had to learn to separate my emotions from business. Most decisions made on behalf of my brand is not about me personally, however the growth in revenue has to match. I have lost friendships during this journey, but it is all in growth.
