We were lucky to catch up with Nahla Bee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nahla , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always loved singing! I love to inspire and uplift others through singing and rapping but I didn’t know how to make it a profession. I performed really well in school academically from receiving a 4.0 GPA in graduate school, to numerous president’s awards and honors for academic excellence through out my school career. And still, music was always my happy place. It wasn’t until I was an undergrad student at Temple University where I decided that I am going to spread my wings and soar into my music career.
Nahla , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been singing since preschool. :)
But it wasn’t until the summer of my senior year in college where I received immense recognition from around the world for my Viral #SoGoneChallenge that landed me on the stage at The Real (Talk Show). From that moment I had several videos go viral and I was seen performing at the Apollo, World Live Cafe, The Wells Fargo Center, Comedy Central (commercial voice over work) and more. While I was performing, I was also teaching middle school science first in Philadelphia and then New York City and now I am a school director.
Serving others through my music is a piece of my purpose. To inspire and uplift others especially my young queens to love themselves despite adversity.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to serve others through the gifts that God has given me. I always remind myself that my gifts don’t belong to me alone, they are to share with others…. to fill someone else’s cups just as my cup as been filled also.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is owning your story. What you share with the world is a myriad of your experiences, your lessons, your triumphs and downfalls. Being a music artist gives you the ability to transform all of that into your art.
