We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nadiya Zhurba a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nadiya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea of creating Ukrainian online school in 2020, when everybody had a big challenge of lack of communication because of COVID. I’m originally from Ukraine, moved to Austin TX 6 years ago and I always did my best in preserving Ukrainian language for my kids in English speaking environment. So when my kids could’n meet their Ukrainian speaking friends I decided to organize online meetings for them. These meetings were not only with their peers but also with teachers from Ukraine and were based on their interests. For example my son loves playing chess and my daughter likes Art so I organised online group classes where kids from different states met once a week with professional teachers from Ukraine, were taught how to play chess/draw and most importantly spoke in Ukrainian. These were my first online classes, soon I realized there was a demand for such type of classes among other Ukrainians in the USA and that’s how I founded my online school. I came up with this idea in the right place at the right time and because of my own need.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Bright Kids Ukrainian Online School is an online school where teachers living in Ukraine teach the Ukrainian language to kids and adults living in the USA, Canada and other countries. We offer private and group online classes to people with different level of knowledge.
For people who already know Ukrainian, we offer live online classes in Coding, Art, Chess, Improv, Voice or other subjects in Ukrainian language.
I’m proud that thanks to my school I can preserve Ukrainian language abroad, give jobs to teachers in Ukraine and support Ukrainian economy, especially now when russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and wants to erase everything Ukrainian from the Earth surface.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that high quality online classes we provide helped us to build reputation within our market. All teachers of the school do their best to make their classes as interesting as possible so the students could learn Ukrainian in a fun and interactive way. There are two main components of successful teaching: each class has to be interesting to students and efective in mastering Ukrainian language. We are also client oriented, always listen to our students needs. These and other factors help us to build a good reputation and grow. Our students can see our high quality lessons, dedication and passion so recommend us to others.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started building my audience from posts on Facebook. I was quite active on Facebook before, had my personal blog so many followed me. Also I started to post in different Facebook groups. Now we post passages from our lessons so interested people could get insider information. Also we use Instagram and TikTok to post different tips how learn the language. We are fair with our followers: show them our real lessons and real process of learning.
