We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NADIR LUMOS a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
NADIR, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Fury & fear mired my young mind for many years, and those emotions caused me to learn to bite my own tongue. When I turned 23 I realized a lot of my negative experiences with my parents and other people were only heightened by my inability to speak up for myself & stand in how I felt. I’ve never asked them, but sometimes I wonder if they pushed me harder in life because they wanted me to speak up for myself. Today I am performing shows around the US, making speeches at graduations, and sharing my voice wherever I am. My parents shared a world of musicians and activists with me that inspired my growth and visions of what my life could be. I grew up with everyone from Fela & Yellowman of Jamaica, to Michael Jackson& Paul Robeson! And my parents are still putting me on to dope artists to this day!! Without their own creative and boisterous spirits in my life, I don’t know if that shy little boy I once was would have ever dared to get on stages or release music for anyone to hear. They’ve always been the lights in my life that inspire me to share and shine!
NADIR, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I don’t really like to call myself a softboi or flower boy in front of people… I get scared people will think I’m weak or fragile. But I think it’s the best way to describe me, so I’m embracing it. I am NADIR LUMOS and I am a singer songwriter and producer based in ATL! So far in my career I’ve played TWO Centennial Park stages, multiple summer festivals, done two mini tours, and since 2019 I’ve been continuously releasing music. My music is all about inner peace, loving, caring, and I like to say if you heard it in a club, drunk as f*ck, you’d probably cry and STILL be dancing. I’m a rockstar at heart, and I love RnB & trap music, so I’ve been mixing elements from them all, creating some pretty potent mixes. On August 13th, one of my special concoctions will be releasing on all platforms: THINGS I WOULD TELL YOU, IF ONLY YOU LISTENED. The record really focuses on relationship issues… like some of my best writing out right now, but I have to say the beat was freaking sick thanks to NE1.Generation production house. It features some really cool guitar riff that we amped up digitally, and we were able to create such mesmerizing vocal moments. Whenever you play it totally put on some good headphones or blast in your car driving at least 70!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
If there’s one book you have to read in your life, it is definitely Walter the Farting Dog. Yes, it’s a children’s book however, it teaches a lesson many people skip over when they’re growing up. Walter the Farting Dog knew he had gas issues, however he didn’t let that stop him from building a multi-million dollar theme park, befriending a beautiful (and rich) family of his own, and inspiring the mayor of the town to use his farts to generate energy for the town. What an innovative way to look at what some people may agree is a curse. Not all lessons have to be learned in an epic memoir or fabled novel. So let Walter the Dog’s farts inspire you to put your best fart, I mean, FOOT forward today!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The only reason I am as creative as I am today is because I fully embraced the passing of culture from the creatives who I’ve met throughout my life. Some of them are platinum selling artists, others are elementary school art teachers, and three of them are my parents! Whether you believe spirits can interact in a metaphysical realm or not, you have to agree that our avatars on Earth at least pass down tradition and culture through our minds, with our hands, and while the blood pumps in our hearts. One thing I think is important to remember is that fire is radiant energy. We absorb and produce some radiant energy it too. Each of us truly has a fire within us that produces light. As NADIR LUMOS I intend for the light I produce to empower those around me through sound, presence, and warmth. Just as those creatives before me sparked my fire, I too want to pass on that flame of life. Above all else, I just wanna wholesome good time!
