We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nachela Knox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nachela below.
Nachela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To succeed, you have to have passion and a higher purpose unrelated to money or fame. If you are only doing something because you want to be rich or famous it can be easy to feel like it’s taking forever and you can forget to celebrate the small wins ultimately it can lead to quitting because “it’s too hard” or “it’s taking to long”. When you have a passion for something and you truly love it you won t quit, and it will never be too hard. For me, that’s directing/filmmaking. No matter how long it takes and how hard it gets I cant and won’t stop. My higher purpose is to teach. I love to inspire other filmmakers who share the same passion as me and seeing young people discover their passion truly warms my heart. It’s something I wish I could have been exposed to when I was younger. When you combine passion and a higher purpose success is inevitable.
Nachela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Nachela Knox. I am a Director, Writer, Producer, CEO of my company ” GoGetHer Productions” and an actress (sometimes lol). I’m originally from Charlotte NC specifically Cornelius NC. I now currently reside in Winston Salem NC. Acting has been my dream for as long as I remember. I participated in church and school plays and studied drama throughout grade school. I originally went to college to major in acting, but after not being accepted into the BFA program, I switched my major to film, fell in love with directing, and never looked back. GoGetHer Productions specializes in directing, writing, casting, and producing. Or as I like to say “We turn visions into reality”. I take their ideas and work with them to create a quality and creative product. I treat each project the same way I treat my original works and by being dedicated and personal I believe that’s what sets me apart. Currently, I am most proud of my first feature film ” Coma Couch”. I wrote, directed, cast, and executive produced the film. We also shot the entire film in only five days. The film is currently in the distribution process, however, I believe it will do well and land in places I never imagined. “Coma Couch” is a true testament to walking by faith and taking a chance and believing God’s promise as I had to take out a loan to finance the film. I am excited for viewers to emerge into the world that I created.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Networking and simply showing up and putting forth my best effort. In the film industry circles are a lot smaller than you think. After you’ve been on a few sets if you made a positive impact, people talk and then those same people will call you for another job, or when you do apply they’ve already heard your name before. Also sometimes especially early in your career, you have to be willing. Meaning sometimes you may have to do more work, or deal with hard situations but if you can do it and do it well it shows everyone around you that not only are you really passionate about this but you are also dedicated to the project, not just yourself and people tend to really respect and admire that.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I used to head a film division and after about 2 years I was unexpectedly let go with no warning and no real reason. I was shocked because I basically built the division and brought on some of my close friends to work we did great work together and everyone seemed to be satisfied. I felt confused, betrayed, and angry but I am forever grateful that moment happened as it led me to this point in my life today. I learned that I could never depend on anyone else for my own success. That the only way that I could ensure my success is if I was fully in control. Hence why I decided to step out on faith and executive produce my 1st feature. Who knows when I would have made my 1st feature if I waited on someone else to give that to me?.I also learned that business and relationships don’t mix and when they do it’s usually a disaster waiting to happen. I also learned how important it is, to be honest, and overall just a good person. I didn’t realize how being around so much drama and bad business practices ultimately affected me and my attitude. So when. I was no longer in that environment I came to a state of peace and confidence and determination to make this dream of mine happen.
