We were lucky to catch up with Naalah recently and have shared our conversation below.
Naalah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Well, overall I’m an emotional being. My emotions have been both beneficial detrimental in my life so far. Of course, it’s allowed me to create the beautiful music I have out today, but at the same time it’s caused me to be misunderstood.
My passion can be misinterpreted & it has been, many times. My energy is extremely strong & it can cause confusion & insecurities in others. It’s sort of like, holding up a mirror to their face & now they begin to question everything they know/knew. Some love that about me, while others- it tends to scare them away and make them dislike me, but then, is it me that they truly dislike, or themselves?
In person I’m extremely reserved and observant. Others will take it as being stuck up, but it’s the way I protect myself. I read the room, check my surroundings & pick up on energies. I’m very open, but at the same time I’m heavily closed off. It’s contradictory at times, but it balances out for me.
The people the know me, truly know me & understand me. They love me. The ones that don’t understand me wreck their brains about it & the confusion turns into envy.
Its exhausting, but I’ve grown used to it.
Naalah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Naalah. (Nah-Lah)
I am an artist, a visionary, a lover, a fighter, an emotional being, a healer, a shit talker, a creator.
I am both peace & chaos.
Nonetheless, I create music directly from my soul.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
So, the advice I would give my younger self in regards this musical journey would definitely be “focus” & most importantly “know yourself”
I’ve noticed that, when you have a light sometimes you tend to attract darkness.
I’m my case, I attracted those who were infatuated with my light, all while wanting to dim it.
You see, the importance of knowing yourself is thee most important thing in this music shit… well, I’m life really.
People will try hard to pit you against yourself because the mind can be a dangerous place. They will plant seeds of doubt into your mind in hopes that you fall for their projections. You are your own worst enemy if you let yourself be.
Many times people will try to tell you who you are based off their perceptions of you. This is why it’s important to know who you are, because if you don’t you will fall into their trap.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Well honestly, I wouldn’t say it’s a specific lesson I had to unlearn, but as of lately I’ve been unlearning & unbecoming. I’m regards to everything.
Every day I learn a lesson. Good, or bad. Each lesson does take me a step forward, but at the same time, some lessons make me step backwards to reevaluate the step that I just took. You know what I mean?
Sometimes you will mess up & that’s when accountability & self awareness comes into play. That’s when you self reflect & then reevaluate & unlearn to relearn.
