We were lucky to catch up with Mz Jolie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project to date is Jolie’s Gems where I teach the younger generation poetry. As entry we ask for a non perishable food item to give back to our homeless community. Classes will start in January for ages 8 and up!
Not a project but I am now a part of a team of poets who are on the rise. We are doing great things. We are S.I.P. appropriately names Sistas in Poetry.

Mz, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I used to be the mom that merely existing but not really living. I decided to do something for me. I signed up for the closest open mic and I received so much love that I couldn’t wait to come back. I grew a fan base and went on to write books, mentor other poets, create a clothing line, make jewelry, began acting, and putting on shows just to name a few. I’m most proud of marrying my poetry and my passion to create a business that I can pass down to my children.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Ok I was a skeptic about social media until one great day the whole world shit down due to the pandemic. I was going stir crazy and craved human interaction so I got on Instagram and saw virtual open mics and poetry slams which was right up my alley. I wasn’t that confident but decided to give it a try. I was good and I began to win and make a name for myself online. I met people from all over the world. I made money doing what I loved and couldn’t be more grateful for social media at that time. It saved me! I started having professionals look over my social media to make sure it was appealing to my target audience. I made full use of hashtags and tagging in my post so my faithful clients can see them. I asked my audience for feedback and asked what they wanted to see more of. I supported other local artist at their shows and they supported me back and I have worked with them. It has been truly rewarding.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. It isn’t what you think. This book doesn’t teach you how to brain wash people but it helps to understand your target audience, how to relate to people and find common ground. How to inspire others who work for you, and how to reach people who are outside of your field of expertise. The most valuable book I’ve bought this year besides my own lol. 48 laws of power, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, just to name a few
