We recently connected with Mystix Mercury and have shared our conversation below.
Mystix , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
In 3rd grade I decided that I wanted to pursue music and art, that is when I realized what makes me happy. Coming from a single parent house-hold with a tight budget, I realized I needed to be involved in school extracurriculars to get ahead. I became active with the Chorus club, Art club and classes. I sang for Spanish diplomats at Miami International Airport when their flight touched down with my chorus club. I got chosen to go to the Miami Beach Art Conference in 2002 with my Art Teacher. I was so fascinated with this music and art world I never thought of regular jobs. I only thought of ways I could become a part of that world.
Throughout my grade-school years I was really focused on learning how to edit videos, graphic design, learning new instruments, singing and learning to produce and record myself. I was very active online and released videos regularly and 2 under an alias on Myspace. Until I started college I realized that the career path I chose wasn’t as clear as I thought it was going to be. I knew about a little of everything but not enough to make income from. I thought about becoming an Elementary school art teacher. For a while I went to college for Early Education. It was a confusing time for me, I was majoring in Education and minoring in Fine Arts. I really didn’t know how I was going to fit my busy artist schedule with a full time job.
I ended up dropping out of college and really focusing on myself and my music. With some help from Traumatize (Miami-Based Cuban Artist) I began organizing myself I realized I had created many avenues for myself by being true to what I wanted to do. People began contacting me for graphic design and video like the work I did for myself. I began managing social media for other artists. Everything started to fall into place for me because I had prepared for it in my way. I realized. that being true to myself, focusing and honing in on my talents created my “regular job” as an artist and creative.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mystix, I am a Miami based Independent Musician and Artist. I have always been focused on developing myself as an artist, branding and marketing ever since I was a child. At 8 I realized what my passion was and started to perfect my singing and art through what was available in school. I began piano classes at 9, instead of taking medication for ADD my mother opted to help my attention by putting me in things I enjoyed and wanted to learn. I started using photoshop at 12 and doing graphic design for people online at 13, editing anime music videos at 15. At 15 I learned how to screen-print and develop my own photos. I also learned how to properly film documentary style videos as well as editing informational type videos. My videos were aired on the morning school news, as well as a closing music video made by me and my peers. This would all help me in the future when I developed my shows “Vintage Cruis’n USA”, Now on season 3, as well as edited my own music videos and created my own merch, website and designs.
People began noticing all the work I produced for myself and wanted to know how they could have me help them with their businesses and professions. Still needing to make an income for myself I began to offer different services I did for myself, for others.
The services I offer are,
Social Media Handling, Product Rebranding, Logo and Graphic Design (Album covers, T-shirts) , Product Design, Mentoring, Product Video Editing, Music Video, Show videos. I also offer, Music Production, Vocals and Verses.
My Rebranding and Graphic design clients usually first come to me with a vibe they want, I ask a lot of questions so we can get to know each other and I pitch something that I envision for them. My design clients are clients for life whenever they need a new product I am the first person they contact because I know exactly what fits their brand.
When it comes to music video and photography I bring a different style that takes you back to another time. People come to me to take their image and bring it into my world of saturation and life. I use different cameras and techniques to create an experience that my clients always come back asking for more.
Currently my endeavors are,
a Micro-Farm with my mother called “Lavender Eden” we wholesale lavender and sage as well as sell different seasonal products.
My online merch and clothing store where I sell things related to my music releases, clothing, art, comics, zines and more.
I am always coming up with new creative ideas and growing from the last.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What drives me is my ever growing curiosity to create something new. To make something never been heard before. To learn something and share it with the world. Until I cease to exist.
My mission will always be to enlighten myself and other through music and art! That is what drives me everyday.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs are a good marketing tool to use as an artist. When I first found out about NFT’s I was a skeptic. I didn’t understand how any of it made sense. Then I realized it was something that I wanted and needed my whole life. I was doing commissioned work and I could have done it in the form of NFT’s to secure that the person who bought it will always be the sole owner of that design. When I realized that I decided to make my own collections. Now almost 1,000 people own my NFTs.
So my view is that it’s a new way for artists to find avenues to monetize and give back to their fans.
