We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mystie Oldham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mystie below.
Alright, Mystie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
BLUM (Beautiful Life Upward Momentum) started in late 2019. Coming from a nursing background I knew exactly ZERO about starting a business. I felt like I needed to know all of the steps, how it would all work out, have all of the systems and answers. It was terrifying to not know.
I had a vision and I knew this was the direction I needed to faithfully walk in.
My best friend is a graphic designer, web developer and master of creativity. We sat down for hours one night with a great bottle of wine, some crunchy snacks and a white board. This is where BLUM was born.
I invested in a like-minded business coach who came from a healthcare background as a physician to help me get started. Did she help me with systems and processes? Yes. More than anything she helped me with my entrepreneurial mindset. She did things like remind me that when I sent an email that sounded like rubbish or had a typo that I was allowed to make mistakes. (and my early email list of 50 subscribers would be forgiving since it was mostly friends and family).
She pushed me to create my first webinar and do my first IG live even thought I didn’t feel ready. These were the reminders I needed to continue sharing my gifts with the world.
Her best piece of advice follows me even today, “It’s always awkward before it’s elegant.”
Mystie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For sure! In case we haven’t met, my name is Mystie! I’m the owner of BLUM Health and Wellness, an online boutique coaching practice that helps women reclaim her time, energy, health and spunk in 90 days. I’m a Registered Nurse and Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. More than that I’m a mom of 3 great kiddos (two naturally and one through the beauty of adoption). I‘m married to my high school sweet heart and we have an address in a KC suburb however we spend a significant part of the year traveling.
I started BLUM when I quickly recognized that our healthcare system is set up for illness, not wellness and that women in particular neglect their holistic health. I knew I could take my passion for medicine, education and busy mamas to create a system to promote change.
Highly motivated women seek me out to help them simplify life and re-establish their spunk. These are women who are tired of feeling tired!! We work on things like streamlining meal planning to save money, avoid the drive thru and feed their families nutritious foods.Gosh so many things! Through working together she experiences the value in insisting on self-care without feeling guilty and prioritize honoring her body with movement as exercise.
I take so much pride in seeing lives changed by slow, subtle shifts in the lives of the women I work with. When the lightbulb goes on for them and they’re able to clearly see progress my heart wants to explode as I cheer for them. Sometimes it gets awkward and I clap like a seal. HA!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
For sure!! I graduated from Saint Luke’s College of Nursing in May of 2005. On June 9, 2005 I was in a car accident that resulted in a fractured pelvis. In my selfish mind I had my whole life and career planned out. I was going to be a flight nurse and a world traveler with my fiancé (now husband). My wreck brought those dreams to a screaching hault. In hindsight this was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Talk about a pivot-this was pretty dramatic. After my recovery, I started working in Endocrinology at St. Luke’s South and quickly discovered my love of teaching and the deep connection that came with this. The Lord opened so many doors during this season of my life. I was able to see that my purpose all along has been to serve the community as a nurse, coaching and inspiration to others.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
What a great question.
I’d say consistently show up as the best version of yourself. This means insisting on exceptional self care for YOU. It sounds backwards when you’re building a business, right? But if I’m not walking in the practice of caring for myself: mind, body, and spirit then I’m trying to hustle and that’s not me. It’s about showing up authentically and providing value. Clients come to me because they see that relatability factor. They work with me because they know they’ll get the results they deeply desire. I’m not the perfect mom and I’ll be the first one to show my blunders in IG stories or share a life changing hack I’ve learned. My growth has been steady and organic instead of rushed and financially driven.
