We were lucky to catch up with Mysi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mysi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Many photographers in the wedding industry have a very particular style (light and airy, dark and moody, true color, etc). But I’m a pretty random person at my core, and my photography is similarly varied from event to event.
I’ve spent my career working with all different styles. I base my editing on the couple’s personal style and the whole vibe of the event! I have photographed weddings that are light and airy for the morning and dark and moody at night, and that’s a beautiful dream for me. I’m obsessed with having the ability to change the feel of a photo through editing!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Mysi. It’s pronounced “Missy”. :) I’ve been photographing weddings for 13 years!
I specialize in curating chaos. Often, the most important moments are quick and quiet (blink and you’ll miss them), and capturing these things for my couples brings me ultimate amounts of joy.
My style is 99% candid, unposed and unscripted. But just because it’s candid doesn’t mean there isn’t a vision. Angles are EVERYTHING, so I’m always on the move (and somehow people never notice I’m there). So, I may also be a ninja. <3
As far as post production goes, I’m a perfectionist. Exit signs and blemishes and garbage cans DO NOT EXIST. I tailor my editing to each of my clients… everyone is different, so I don’t just slap a filter on things and call it a day. Each photo is its own little work of art!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In 2011, I photographed my very first Indian wedding. From there, I photographed so many of their cousin’s weddings and then their friends’ weddings and then their friends’ friends’ weddings. Word of mouth is powerful and important. I love my clients so much (sometimes I cry about it, shhhh).

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2022, we moved from Chicago to the Los Angeles area!! Because my business is largely word-of-mouth, I am currently working on building a new client base here! It’s hard to meet new people (because despite my love of chaos, I am an introvert), but it’s slowly beginning to take shape. I’m focusing on meeting event planners who share my passion for quirky cosmic lovers, and I am so excited (despite also being nervous). I’ve also finally raised my prices to match my experience and skills… and so that I can afford the cost of living in this crazy place. :)
