Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Myriad Slits. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Myriad, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happy as a creative & I do have a regular job. What I wish I obviously had more of is time & an abundance of money. So many great artists were able to become great artists because of those two things. the older & the more expensive everything becomes I sometimes feel frustrated that I cant do everything I want because I have to pay rent & go to my regular job. but also I am going to do whatever it is that I want to do. I will always try to at least.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a songwriter & performer for the band ModPods. I am an art educator for young children. I am sometimes called on to mess with & transform space. I’m the creator of ‘Morton Salt Childrens Religious Revival’ which is a very tongue in cheek art retreat that just completed its 17th year. I am truly multidisciplinary. I am a curator of fun. And I’m always taking a ton of instant photos.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is all the great people I get to meet & be friends with. There are so many great artists that do different & amazing work that are so open & willing to connect with me & I think that has been my favorite part. Seeing who is willing to follow thru on their own ideas & who also encourage & inspire me to follow thru on mine.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think that people who put up art shows have a great responsibility to the community they choose to put up shows in. Curators need to make an effort to put spotlights on the artists that come from the very neighborhoods they are promoting art in. Its easy to say “Buy Art!” but a lot of people don’t have money to even feed themselves right now. I think its important to encourage people who are passionate in creating. no matter what stage they are in. I also think its important for anyone who has a love for art to step out of their go to comfort zone. To explore things that aren’t necessarily in your “scene” or your type of “vibe”
