Today we’d like to introduce you to Myranda Cleary
Hi Myranda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in healthcare consulting. I wasn’t sure what the right path was, but I knew I wasn’t patient enough to go to school for 12 years to become a doctor and wanted to start earning a living. So, I combined healthcare and business and went into consulting. I found myself constantly wanting to get to the root cause of a problem to understand why things were the way they were. So, to understand healthcare, you have to understand who pays for care. So, I went to work for a large health insurance company. I discovered the ins and outs of how claims processing work, what drove cost, how to manage those costs and how to help people navigate the crazy system. We would spend a lot of time with providers (doctors, nurses, administrators at health systems) and I found myself wanting to know more about how that process worked. So, I moved into an Administrator role to launch a new primary care clinic. I was finally able to tie everything together down to the patient at the end of it, receiving care. My assumptions were confirmed – the system is so broken. This past year I launched my own business: NuLight Consulting LLC. This organization is fully focused on lowering healthcare costs for employers and their employees. If we can start tackling this problem through the existing infrastructure, we have endless possibilities for what we can do in the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For every change, there are always risks and uncertainties. Ultimately my focus was immersing myself in the existing models so I could offer the lowest cost, best coverage option to employers of all sizes. In doing so, I discovered the challenges in implementing “the perfect model”. What makes sense logically, isn’t always legal or compliant, would you believe. So, in playing by the rules, I was able to modify my approach to provide an offering that not only lowers costs but promotes well-being and longevity for people. This required several rounds of refinement and feedback from trusted advisors who also believe in the mission of lowering healthcare costs.
We’ve been impressed with NuLight Consulting LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NuLight Consulting is the only organization in Kansas City offering the lowest cost health insurance model while promoting positive health management. We work with employers of all sizes to understand their employee population and provide a customized health plan that meets their employee’s health needs and budget. We are different from other organizations because we are 1 – local, we meet you where you’re at, 2 – transparent, we believe that to do this right, there can’t be hidden agendas or incentives, and 3 – a partner, we align with you to deliver a best-in-class health offering for your employees from beginning to end. Our team is dedicated and focused on ensuring our clients have the best experience working with us. We base our business primarily on referrals and we pride ourselves on the positive feedback we’ve received as a result of our services.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
As I mentioned, our business is based on referrals, so networking is a key part of our business strategy. We spend about 20% of our time focused on building relationships within the community so that when the time is right, businesses are seeking us out first to utilize our services.
As for finding a mentor per se, I don’t know if it’s necessary. It is important to have trusted advisors in your corner, but I wouldn’t call them mentors. By trusted advisors I mean someone who you have an established relationship with that you can call up to run something past them and get feedback. No strings attached. Mentors can work well for people, but in my experience instead of looking for 1 mentor, look in your already established network. Who can you meet for coffee or set up a quick 15 min call to run through your business ideas or a current problem. This is often easier than trying to establish a recurring meeting or commitment that most people aren’t willing or able to devote themselves to.
