We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Myra Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Myra below.
Hi Myra, thanks for joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As as black woman who as Autism, I was often told I would never going to be much in life. Expectations were low for me. Growing up I was bullied and misunderstood in school as well as under supported. I almost committed suicide several times, and taken advantage of my whole life. I thought I didn’t put myself and gave myself to others that would find love and happiness. I often felt I was unworthy of have any agency unless it was given to me.
Myra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Fashion, Cosplay, and Modeling, artistic expression has been a major part of my life. It has helped me heal, plus it has been a vehicle for me empower others. quirky, queer, and unapologetic, I refuse to let Autism or my trauma define my path.
I started my modeling career in 2016, walking in over 50+ shows, as well as participating in NYFW, as well as traveling to various places abroad. I also have been in commercials/film work with notable companies such as Netflix, HBO, Universal, and Warner Bros.
Cosplay was weird start but I officially started back in 2021 with my girlfriend who catapulted me back into the nerdy side of things. I actually had been into geek culture since I was a kid. That was sort of my outlet when I was being bullied. I would dive into my favorite manga, the latest story on my favorite anime, or I would keep up with the next addition of DC or Marvel. 2022 started me on burlesque and journey of loving my body through dance.
Through that I rebranded myself Fever Dreame Modeling & Cosplay.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to create a program that supports POC autistic individuals in creative sectors. Neurodivergent individuals are apart of the innovators that have shaped the world. I want to continue that legacy.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s the community, it’s not about becoming famous for me. It’s about finding my purpose.
