We were lucky to catch up with Mynka Morris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mynka, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I still remember the exact moment I realized my styling business had reached beyond my city. Up until then, most of my clients had been local—women in Los Angeles and nearby areas. But when I relaunched my services to offer virtual styling, I had no idea just how far my reach could go.
One day, I did a YouTube video with my mentor all about styling a simple hoodie in three different ways—for work, for the weekend, and for a night out. It wasn’t anything flashy, just an everyday piece made versatile. A few days later, I got a DM from someone all the way in Romania. I was shocked – Romania! She told me she had watched my video and loved how I transformed something so basic into multiple looks that actually worked for different parts of her life. She felt like she finally saw a stylist who got her—who wasn’t just pushing trends but showing real, practical style solutions.
And just like that, she wanted to work with me. No hesitation, no questions—she was ready. That moment was huge. It was proof that my approach to styling could resonate with people anywhere, even across continents. My first international client wasn’t just a milestone; it was a shift in perspective. That first international dollar showed me that OH STYLISH MYNKA wasn’t just a local business anymore—what I was building had the power to reach women all over the world.
And I won’t lie—I definitely had a little moment of celebration! Because that was the day I knew: this wasn’t just a dream. It was real. And it was only the beginning.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Mynka Morris, a personal stylist based in Los Angeles, California, and my passion lies in helping women discover and embrace their most powerful selves through style. My journey into personal styling began with a deep appreciation for fashion and its transformative power. Over time, I realized that many women, despite their achievements, often struggled to reflect their true selves through their wardrobe. This inspired me to bridge the gap between personal identity and outward appearance, leading me to establish my personal styling business.
I offer a range of services tailored to meet each client’s unique needs, including personal styling sessions, wardrobe audits, and shopping assistance—both in-person and virtual. Many of my clients feel overwhelmed by their closets, disconnected from their personal style, or unsure how to create a polished, cohesive look that aligns with their lifestyle. My goal is to take the stress out of getting dressed by curating a style strategy that feels authentic and effortless.
What sets me apart is my commitment to truly understanding my clients beyond just their clothing preferences. I believe style is a form of self-expression, and every outfit should reflect the person wearing it. One of my proudest moments was witnessing a client’s transformation after our styling sessions—she not only felt more confident in her appearance but also in her professional interactions. Those moments affirm why I do what I do.
At its core, my brand is about more than just fashion and style; it’s about empowerment. I want my clients to feel like their best selves every day, not just for special occasions. Through my styling services, I make fashion accessible, enjoyable, and, most importantly, personal. My goal is to help women show up as the best version of themselves—because when you look good, you feel unstoppable. A lot of my clients become close friends because I build lasting bonds with them throughout the style development process.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started out as a fashion stylist working with celebrities, thinking it would be the dream—glamorous red carpets, editorial shoots, and high-profile clients. And while it was an incredible experience, I quickly realized something was missing. When you’re styling for celebrities, you’re often following the direction of their management or PR team, which means you’re not really able to make true transformational changes to their wardrobe or personal style. Instead of creating something unique and impactful, I found myself working within strict boundaries that didn’t allow for much creativity or personal connection.
That lack of fulfillment made me take a step back and ask myself what I really wanted out of my styling career. I didn’t just want to put together trendy looks for high-profile events—I wanted to help real women feel confident in their everyday lives. I wanted to build genuine connections, understand their struggles with style, and create wardrobes that actually made them feel like the best version of themselves. That’s when I pivoted into personal styling.
Making the transition was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now, I get to work one-on-one with women who are ready for a real transformation. I help them develop their style from the inside out, so they’re not just wearing beautiful clothes—they feel beautiful, powerful, and unstoppable in them. Seeing my clients step into their confidence and fully embrace their personal style is what makes this work so rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Starting a business is exciting, but the reality is—passion alone doesn’t pay the bills. When I decided to step into personal styling full-time, I knew I needed financial stability to make it work. So, I made a strategic decision: I kept my 9-to-5 job while building my styling business from the ground up.
Balancing both was no easy feat. By day, I was fulfilling my full-time job responsibilities, and by night (and every spare moment in between), I was pouring my energy into growing my brand. I would take client calls on my lunch breaks, spend evenings researching trends, sourcing outfits, and fine-tuning my services. Weekends were dedicated to photoshoots, style sessions, and content creation—essentially, I was working two full-time jobs.
There were times when exhaustion crept in, but I kept reminding myself why I was doing this. Every paycheck from my 9-to-5 wasn’t just covering my personal expenses—it was an investment into my dream. That income funded my website, marketing, client materials, and every little thing that helped shape my brand into what it is today.
It wasn’t always glamorous, but I knew that financial independence would allow me to grow my business on my terms. I wasn’t reliant on investors or loans—I was building something solid, step by step. And when the time came to transition fully into personal styling, I did so with confidence, knowing I had laid the foundation the right way.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. That period of hustle taught me resilience, time management, and the value of betting on myself. Every long day and late night was worth it because now, I get to do what I love—helping women discover their most powerful selves through style.
