Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Myna Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Myna, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Within the floristry industry, there’s a misconception that florists are overpaid for their work. Which isn’t the case at all. Sure it’s easy to go to the grocery store and buy flowers for cheaper. But there’s plenty of things to consider. For example, the customer isn’t aware of how long the flowers have been sitting in that bucket, with the same water. It could be days, or even until they’re at the end of the florals lifespan. The quality usually isn’t as good as getting it from a florist either. The most important thing to my business is quality and expertise. I pride myself with the knowledge and care I give to my customers when they make a purchase with my business. I also believe that my pricing is very competitive with other floral businesses and I don’t overcharge. My business is known for its affordability and I like to keep it that way.
Myna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I own a floral business, specializing in events but also create floral arrangements for every occasion. I first started my business back in the beginning of 2023. I first thought of the idea to start my own business a couple of years prior to that, but life events happened, and I had to put my thoughts on hold. What sets my business apart from others is that I am with my customers every step of the way. From designing to coordinating, to bringing their vision to life. I make sure they know I value them and they’re not just another customer in my books. Communication is very important to my business and to my customers. So I definitely pride myself with that. I want my customers and future customers to know that they will always be in the loop with everything I do for their event.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being in the floral industry is tough at times. Ultimately, you’re selling yourself and your work. Customers have plenty of places to get flowers from and I have to set myself apart from them. There have been very slow times and sometimes the thought of stopping has crossed my mind. I just had a baby recently and I had to take a break from my business towards the end of my pregnancy until I gave birth. But being on maternity leave has made me want to grow my business more. I love what I do and I want to keep providing my services and showcase my creative mind.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m not the best at social media when it comes to posting and engaging. But recently I’ve learned that to grow my business, I had to be active in social media and grow a following. I believe my following came from others that want to support my business and others that have supported my business and I thank them for that. My advice for those starting out is to keep posting and showcase your work.
