We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Myles Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Myles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
It was a moment in my life where I wasn’t really sure what it was I wanted to do and/so I went to a financial seminar and that’s where I heard a woman speaker ask the question: What do you do? And she said the typical answer people usually respond with is their job. Now she followed up with saying, “ now what is it that you do for the world?” After hearing this I wanted to change my answer into something simple, and that answer being “ give back. “ I wanted to have a purpose with the life I’ve been blessed with and I wanted to give back no matter what that meant: whether that be physically, mentally, or emotionally helping others proceed forward in life. Once I discovered my purpose was giving back everything else made sense. Putting others needs before my own just felt right. Especially knowing that someone’ else’s life out there is a lot worse than me. A helping hand could go so much further than the eye itself can see.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a self made God Fearing man. I have been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love and that’s giving back to my community as well as helping others reach their fitness goals. I started physical training shortly after finishing college about 8 years ago and I just grew to love the feeling of seeing others push towards their goals in life. While shaking hands and opening new doors I found myself loving the idea of giving back to the less fortunate. Me and a buddy of mine started a charity event not knowing the success it would bring. A simple game of kickball brought out the generous hands of others who were willing to give what they did not need. From canned goods, clothes, sheets, to everyday essentials in order to help the needs of others who couldn’t provide for themselves. I want potential and ongoing clients and followers to develop their own understanding of purpose in life, and take full action of the opportunity of life they have. My brand is MUJ_Fitness and those are my initials. I wanted something that represented me and show what I’m all about and that’s simply giving my passion and love in all that I do.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think being able to always adapt and adjust is just as important as anything else you do within your profession. Knowledge is power, so I feel the desire to want to learn new skills and techniques is key to always being successful. Understanding your crowd and accepting criticism rather positive or negative is important. Also never being satisfied with your situation. I’m a firm believer in always trying to be productive no matter what. We have too much life to just let it go to waste.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’d say a lesson I had to unlearn is my own self awareness and understanding my attitude sometimes. I want things perfect and when they don’t go as planned I sometimes becomes impatient. I’ve always been a self driven individual and if no one else will step up I’ll be the leader and do it myself, however with time I’ve learned to be patient and allow things to work out the way it’s supposed to. It’s okay to take a step back sometimes and reevaluate the situation. I always preach you versus you to my clients so sometimes I have to listen to my own advice and take a moment to relax.
