We were lucky to catch up with Myles Goliday recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Myles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
If I had to pick one person as my hero in my life it would most likely be Tyler, the Creator. He was a massive influence in my early years which is shocking being a 3rd grader listening to the odd future tape. One thing he has consistently influenced me on is to be your own self, and don’t pay attention to what anyone else thinks about you. This came from one of his early songs a radicals (specifically the verse about being a unicorn) and moreover his actual personality.
As an equal to Tyler the Creator it would be remise to not include Larry June, who has been one of my largest influences post 18 years of age to the present. Something about keeping things “organic”, and living your life to be healthy, and take control of your own existence has always been a necessary thing for my own day to day life.
Myles , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My first step into all the industries I represent were primarily accidents. Materials engineering stemmed out of me being a mechanical engineer, and preferring quantum physics principles of semiconductors. Becoming a DJ came from a bad day at work and wanting to throw a party with friends, and then a bar reached out and wanted us to host at there establishment. Furthermore all of the photography, creative direction, and producing came out of my friends saying that you can do all of these things because of who you are as a person.
However, I think what sets me apart from everyone else is my ability to try any task and work at it until I feel like it’s something I could explain to someone else with minimal error. This is one of my most proud abilities; the ability to drive myself to understand anything no matter how dull it could potentially seem. If it has a purpose or a need to be met then I would learn it no matter how difficult. This would be the one thing I would want any person to know about me, my work ethic and desire for knowledge grow independent of each other but exponentially as a whole.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think one of the things a non-creative would struggle to understand in relation to my story is how did the materials engineer interested in quantum physics get into DJing and photography and all these other forms of media in the midst of his undergraduate years and still pass his classes. Following this degree path is the least creative situation and is super math heavy, but it’s also enjoyable. However what has consistently helped me through the times of struggle in the degree field has been the creative things I distract myself with. It helps me keeps focus on the serious things in life while still having fun as well.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is watching the whole process culminate into the final presentation of everyone’s work or just mine. That point is always an extremely enjoyable to finally see everyone’s hard work finally reach the masses.
