Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Myles Cordae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I go by Myles Cordae. My brand and logo is Facin Art. The name Facin, pronounced (fay-sen), Is the nickname mama gave me when I was a baby boy. Before she went home to her new life a few years back , I asked her what that name meant. She told me she liked the way my face looked when I was a a very young child.
I’m a 70’s baby from Wisconsin that fell in love with art after I moved from my hometown here to Texas over 12 years ago.
After a divorce I left my city and moved to Texas. I was happy with the move, but I still became depressed and sad many many days and nights. I saw something on television one night about art and it peaked what I feel had been dormant or untapped inside of me.
I kept repeating to myself that I want to do that. I want to do that. I want to paint. One day I woke up and went got some paints, brushes, and canvases. I watched many shows and full documentaries on artists and about the subject of art. ANYTHING art.
Although my favorite mediums are oil paint and charcoal, I watched and listened to artists that take photography, artists that use watercolor, artists that were the founders, graffiti artists, dancers, writers, and so much more. I absolutely love art!
I learned as much as I could over the years and eventually gained more belief in myself which helped my mood tremendously. I have done shows all over the country and was extremely blessed to have a mentor such as Frank Frazier. I have gained a cool art family out here in Texas and I have met some wonderful people on my art journey.
I eventually opened an art gallery in Arlington. I Learned so many lessons and met so many great people from having the art gallery. I have clients that still call and purchase art from me.
I love what I do so I really take pride and. Joi in making people happy with my visions and interpretations of their visions.. Getting paid to do it is just a nice bonus. I learned long ago that if you just do what you are passionate about the money will come in time.
I realize there are tons of artists that a collector can choose from in this digital age. With that realization I feel that anyone that commissions me , or chooses me for a painting is a big deal. I don’t take it lightly. I never missed a deadline and have shipped my art all over the country and as far as Canada.
My art is from ME, My energy, My eye, My stories.. Ill never stop creating art , and my motto is “Keep Pushin”
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When my goal of opening an art gallery came to fruition I was elated beyond measure. It lasted all of a little over 2 years. The rent to just turn the key was 2k/month I was doing art full time and I loved it, but eventually that rent just became too much to bear. One day I told a friend of mine that I could have bought a new Mercedes Benz. He said, “ Yes, but you wouldn’t have accomplished that goal or lived out this dream of yours.”
He was right and that perspective gave me some peace with having to pivot and close shop. About three months later Covid shocked the world. In hindsight I felt closing the gallery was right on time.
Pivots are ok , standing still after the pivot is not.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was depressed after my divorce, I left my adult children, my family, friends, and everyone I knew at home in Wiscansin to pursue an unknown life here in Texas. I was terrified and sad many times, but I stayed the course. Closing my gallery was sad and it put me in a rut and a funk. I cried, prayed, & stayed the course
I got very little support when I started doing art . I gave art away and undersold myself so many times just to make a sale. I stayed the course, and now I name my price and have many clients who support me and buy my art.
Did I mention my motto was “KEEP PUSHIN”
