We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mykia J. . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mykia below.
Mykia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I am happy being a business owner. I am exhilarated daily to know that I get to awake every morning and chase my personal dreams and assist others to chase their dreams as well. I often think about what it would be like to have a “regular job”. When thinking about entering the corporate world again I know without a doubt it would have to be a career where I am able to still be creative and incorporate my incredible ability to be a thought partner.
The last time I contemplated going back into the corporate world was or is currently to be completely honest. I became a full time entrepreneur in 2015. After making a very hard decision to do what was best for my family at the time. My oldest son was having extreme difficulty with school and we were being called weekly to assist with him. I decided that I would do whatever I needed to so my family could succeed. My son will be eighteen and is thriving as a young adult. It was my sincere prayer that God would provide a way while I was assisting him in school. I have the freedom to join the workforce full time again and not have the full responsibility of being all of the rolls in my business. I honestly just don’t know what that would look like after all of this time of doing exactly what I want to when I want to. There also is freedom in clocking out and not worrying about anything until you clock back in on Monday morning.
I recently was in Mexico and took a couple days to re-evaluate my idea of being a business owner and or an employee. I don’t know if I have come to a conclusion, There isn’t really security in either world. I think ultimately it depends on my heart desires and the needs of my family.
As for now I am a business owner, full time entrepreneur and an Accountability Coach who desire nothing more than extreme success.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am Mykia J. a professional photographer who resides in Baltimore, Maryland, I am the Co-owner of Uniquely Framed Beauty and Photography Studio located in the historic Mt. Vernon. I am a certified professional Accountability Coach and the creator of The Blue Print Accountability Group. To sum it all up I LOVE WHAT I DO and I DO WHAT I WANT!
I have loved photography for as long as I can remember and until the last five years it has always been considered a hobby for me. I became serious about photography after I begin to create graphics for events and realized that people did not know how important professional portraits were.
Photography became my safe space. It was the freedom I needed at a time when my mind was consumed by life’s unexpected events. I loved the joy that I was able to capture in every session. I also became inspired by the stories I heard behind the camera. During my first year of professional photography I realized that I had the ability to make people feel comfortable enough to be honest and transparent, I knew instantly that I wanted to be able to do that as well. While everyone was home during the pandemic I took that time to study and practice photography on anyone and everyone I possibly could. Then I begin to make money from doing it. In September 2021 I and my business partner opened up our Beauty and Photography Studio.
We offer makeup, waxing, facials, and cosmetic tattooing. (Beauty services) We also offer all types of portrait sessions including but not limited to creative, branding and lifestyle. We assist with marketing and aesthetic branding for small businesses as well.
I am extremely proud of the fact that I decided to chase my dreams as hard as I was chasing the dreams of others for so long.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Kristen Kristenized is my amazing business partner. We met through an incredible woman by the name of Meghann J. Wilson. Meghann was my bestfriend and Kristen’s cousin. She introduced us. Kristen became my makeup artist and I was working with her as an accountability coach before I was actually a coach. Meghann held a special part in the both of our lives and would have been incredibly proud of us both if she was here to see what we have created.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media has been something that I’ve loved since as early as MySpace. I’ve always been able to build a community virtually. Getting a following on social media for our business has been the same. I am inspired by real connections, authentic people and genuine relationships. I am a strong believer that everyone isn’t your client. By not just having followers but building a community it was not hard to market or have our community to spread the word for us as well. If I could offer a piece of advice for anyone just starting that want to build their own following I would say to BE YOU. Do not pretend to be anyone else, to make promises you can not keep and really converse with people. It is SOCIAL MEDIA so be social.
