We were lucky to catch up with Mykayla Victoriano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mykayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
When I was little my mom had turned our laundry room into a little studio and me and my siblings would have so much fun dressing up and playing with props and having our photos taken! I loved photography but realized pretty quick I wasn’t a huge fan of being in front of the camera I wanted to be behind it! From the moment I got my first cell phone I was using it to take pictures with. When my sister was a senior she asked me to take some of her senior photos on her cell phone and I had SO much fun!! It was around then I knew I wanted to be a photographer. Over the years I practiced with my phone and would google everything, I had lots of family that knew that’s what I wanted I just wasn’t moving forward very fast. After mentioning my passions a few times my step sister asked me to take photos of her wedding and she had a friend that would let me use her camera. I was over the moon excited! When I held that camera everything just felt right. Of course after the wedding I had to return the camera and it was honestly so hard knowing it wasn’t mine. A year later I ran into the woman who lent me her camera and she found out that photography was what I wanted to do and ended up having that same camera in her car and it hadn’t been used since I had used it. She GAVE it to me and wished me luck on my business. That was a huge turning point in my life. I had family and friends letting me practice on them, I took a college class to learn how to use my camera and got a certificate in business. After a few years of practicing and figuring out my style and a moving to another state I had decided to make it official and I started my business! I got to work with some amazingly talented models and make money capturing memories for some awesome awesome clients! It has taken me years to get where I am and it will be years before I am where I would like to be, but I am so proud of my journey and wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Mykayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mykayla Victoriano and I am a photographer. My business is called life’s moments photography and my goal is to capture memories that will last. I take photos of everything I can, so there is almost no session I will turn down. I will plan your session with you and discuss location and I can provide color schemes that can be used to coordinate your wardrobe. This can be over email, text, call, videocall, or in person. I offer high quality print products and I can plan and customize your products with you to make sure everything is exactly how you would like. I offer a range of services from paying clients to collaborating with models. I have been published in a couple magazines and was so excited when I made the front cover of one! This journey has been all over the place but getting published has been a huge highlight for me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I didn’t grow up with much money and my goal was always to be able to live and provide a comfortable life for myself and family. I hope to someday be working with much larger magazines and have the opportunity to meet some amazing influential people! I plan for my business to be big beautiful and profitable! I’m so much farther than when I started but I have so far still to go and I can’t wait.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
This may be different than a lot of photographers, but I had reps for different styles of photography. They would get 3 months to schedule free sessions with a certain number of images provided free. They could purchase more but all free images would be used to promote my business and show my work when I didn’t know many people and had to get my work and talents out there and noticed. It helped a ton getting my name out there and building a more professional portfolio outside of personal family and friends. After I started using reps for my business I started getting notice and having people including models reach out to work with me. It felt fantastic!! I don’t believe anyone is above working for free every so often if it’s beneficial to the growth of your business!
