We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mykaela Chandler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mykaela below.
Alright, Mykaela thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Something that I do with my business, Browscape Studios, that differs from the industry standard is that my clients feel cared for in a way that creates genuine connections with everyone who walks into my studio. When you’re getting a service like permanent makeup it’s a big decision and you want to feel comfortable with who your artist is. From my client’s reviews, I provide a space and service that brings them more than just comfort and the results they are looking for. I take care of my business because it takes care of me, I work hard for what I have earned and will continue doing so but my main focus will always always be my clients. With that said, something else I do is try not to overload myself by taking one to two clients a day so I have my full energy and focus on them. Every client deserves to feel like more than just a client or a booking slot. From the time you step into my studio and well after, you will have someone dedicated to you who gives you the results you want but also has created friendship and connection. Not working a 10-12 hour day under someone else and being able to create a business that stands out from the industry standard is something that I take deep pride in. I understand that what I do makes an impact on others’ lives and I’m so thankful to be able to do it. The clients that have struggled with their brow image and self-confidence get to leave feeling like the beautiful person they already are. I had a mother come in wanting to never have to do her brows again because she could never get the shape she wanted which affected her confidence. We did the procedure and when we revealed her brows her reaction was priceless. She left the studio so grateful and said she felt “so beautiful for once”. That moment is one I will remember for a long time and am so thankful to have experienced early in my career.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up and to this day I’ve always been someone who cares deeply for others, loves to help where I can, is quite optimistic, has an enlightening smile, is down to earth, and can make anyone feel heard or seen. Growing up with caring qualities I decided I wanted to study nursing in college. I haven’t always been a permanent makeup artist, for the past few years actually I worked as a nursing assistant and was studying for nursing school. I learned so much and still think nursing could be in the future for me, especially with the impact and friendships I created with my patients. After a few years, I decided to step away and attend esthetician school which is something my sister told me to try a while ago I just never listened, thank you Ava. I began esthetician school and met so many amazing girls there. After a couple of months into esthetician school, my sister introduced me to her friend Ruby, my amazing mentor who took me under her wing and taught me about ombre powder brows. After that, I decided it was time to start looking for a studio or a place to booth rent so I could keep it up because I was on cloud 9 learning and doing ombre brows, I found something I’m so deeply passionate about. While looking for a studio, taking model clients with my mentor, and practicing I was also finishing esthetician school and graduated back in October of 2024. I passed my state boards and am happy to say I’m a state board-licensed esthetician and a licensed permanent makeup artist running my own business. This has been one of the craziest journies life has taken me on so far and I’m super excited to see where it takes me next. At Browscape Studios I specialize in Ombre Powder brows but I also offer facial/brow waxing and brow laminations and tints. My main priority at Browscape Studios is my clients and I’m learning and growing every day to continue giving everyone my best always. I love being able to give women brows that make them feel like themself, beautiful, and flawless every day with no effort. Something that everyone should know about ombre powder brows is that they are customizable to your face, wants, and needs. There are so many different techniques you can use to create exactly what you want, even the natural girlies can get it!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One thing I think helped build my reputation within my market is not just the end product but how my clients speak about me. What your client says about you is very important, they can either bring down your business or they can raise your business. Take care of your clients and your clients will take care of you.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I started attending esthetician school before I started doing permanent makeup and I thought I would be doing lashing or working out of a medspa as my full-time job. I never thought that doing permanent makeup would be my full-time job just something I could get a couple of clients here and there for. Now I make a living off of doing brows! I gone from working as a nursing assistant to an esthetician to a pmua. Things will all work out in the end and come full circle.
