We were lucky to catch up with Myka Worth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Myka, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
My whole life I have always heard the word “success” without really taking into account what it means. Success is a lot of different things for a lot of different people. It is entirely up to your own personal goal. To be successful you have to be prepared to take risks. John Assaraf said, “A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.” Not only do you need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, but you have to be prepared to put in the work. This can mean late nights, early mornings, networking events, working weekends, doing the work that others won’t. Many people have this “American dream” of whatever they view the goodlife as, but few will put in the effort to achieve it. Another attribute of success is setting boundaries. I am a firm believer that it is okay to grow beyond other people. You need to be a strong enough person to know when to draw the line and be able to put yourself first. Lastly, and honestly the most importantly, is a good sense of humor. The path to success is not linear. If you cannot laugh during the way you might go insane.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a licensed cosmetology for 6 years. Growing up I was obsessed with all things hair and beauty. My mom is a cosmetologist so I always grew up in the salon. I feel like I should have known this would be my career in fifth grade when i was rewarded a paper that said “class diva” because on picture day I brought this old beat up conair curling iron with me and insisted that I had to curl my hair before photos. I would like to say that my skills have improved immensely since I was 11. I love doing everything from color, color corrections, extensions, and especially bridal. I truly feel like I have the best job in the world. I get people in for huge life milestones, moms that never get a moment to themselves, breakups, tragedies, and for a little bit I get to help them not focus on life outside of my chair. I take a lot of pride in being a safe space for people and getting to make them feel beautiful at the same time. Something that sets me apart is that I love hearing from my clients. Not just a text for an appointment, but I love when they message me to tell me about their vacation or update me on their kids. I want to celebrate life with every client. I am very proud of how far I have come. When I first graduated I started in a chain salon. Shortly after I joined the military and have traveled all over. During July of 2020 right in the thick of everything I decided to bear down and really start investing in my career. In a whole new area I have built my clientele from the ground up and now have an amazing suite that I am proud to call home!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Absolutely, and that is social media. When I first started it was rare to see a hair instagram. There might have been a few facebook pages, but no one was trying to give out their secrets. It is a whole new world now. Online education classes are prevalent. There are lists of forums on every platform where creators will give a step-by-step on how they created their work. I highly recommend in person classes as well. There is something amazing about the energy in a room filled with other creators.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I live in a military town so I am constantly rebuilding my clientele. My number 1 tip is social media is your best friend. Join every community page in your area and do not be afraid to put yourself out there. Not only does posting help to reach clientele, but tell people about it when you’re running errands or getting dinner. Your business is something to be proud of so talk about it like you are a proud mom whose child made the honor roll. Manifest the growth. Wake up with the goal of bringing in however many new clients and make it happen!
