We were lucky to catch up with Myisha Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Myisha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I was tired of being overworked and with insubstantial pay. I was tired of working different positions accruing more moral injury, burnout, and compassion fatigue. I was tired of making mistakes just to find my place to enjoy working within the social work field. Therefore, I decided to start Myisha Marie’s Counseling & Consulting LLC after the end of 2021. Deep down I knew that the only “perfect” job would be the one I create.
The major step I took to create Myisha Marie’s Counseling & Consulting LLC was shifting and totally revamping my mindset about money. Coming from a family where I was taught that the only way to earn a living was through education and working a job, unlearning financial habits that will sustain my business was initially hard, and to be honest, I am still learning. I am now unlearning beliefs and habits, applying new habits to create a solid financial foundation with the guidance of my business mentor. My business mentor often explains the rigorous side of the business and challenges me in ways in which I did not expect him to. Moreover, Social work professionals are barely taught about finances in graduate school. So learning and applying financial education was and is the biggest step to creating Myisha Marie’s Counseling & Consulting LLC.
For upcoming mental health practitioners, I would advise not to neglect the foundation, be flexible to change, and to get help in the areas with which you are not the strongest in. I would also advise aspiring mental health practitioners to be flexible to change as this can save you a lot of distress throughout your journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Myisha Jones, and I am a Social Worker with over ten years of experience serving children and families in varied mental health settings.
As a Therapist, I help creatives learn how to calm performance related anxiety and overcome self-doubt. My ideal therapy client struggles to create their art (form) fluently. They may feel as if they are not good enough. They may self-sabotage with excessive worry, and they may often negate their talents. I help creatives understand and realize their own power and uniqueness in order for them to create their art more fluently.
Also, as a Mental Health Consultant, I provide mental health education (hourly) to individuals or small groups including but not limited to local community organizations, youth/women’s empowerment groups, and nonprofit institutions specifically targeting black girls and women.
Moreover, I am proud of my business journey. Yes, I am creating a business while helping others, however, this entrepreneurial journey has quite the personal impact. I created Myisha Marie’s Counseling & Consulting LLC after working hard at failing systems. As you become an entrepreneur, you are defining everything. You are defining yourself, your services, your price, and the impact you would like to be known for. Moreover, I want my clients to know that the space we share is authentic, safe, colorful, and impactful.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Jokingly so, I didn’t choose to be a social worker; this profession chose me! So, if I did have more of a choice, I would NOT choose to be a Social Worker/Therapist. I am just being honest. Social Work is not an easy line of work; we are not working with reports and concepts that could be the same across the board; We are working with complex people, issues, and systems.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“Rich Dad Poor Dad” and “The Alchemist” are the books that definitely helped shape the foundation of my entrepreneurial journey. These are great reads and I would suggest these to anyone who is trying to overcome personal obstacles as they are following their dreams and aspirations.
