Myesha , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
After completing my studies in Trichology, I started my practice as a Holistic Practitioner of Trichology, I was still employed as a 9-5 employee. It was difficult working my full time job and just opening my own business. I did not have the time to fully work my business and came to a point where I had to make the decision to pursue my business full time. It’s was a big risk because my business was not making the revenue needed to cover my business expenses or my personal expenses. I remember watching Steve Harvey’s YouTube video called Jump at work. It immediately brought tears to my eyes because I knew this is what I had to do….jump and take the leap of faith. Two weeks later. I did just that! I quit my full time job and pursued my dream of treating women with hair loss and opening my salon. I have not looked back and believe God provided my every need during this transition.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At the age of 11, I suffered from hair loss and chemical burn from my first relaxer my mother took me to get at a hair salon for her wedding. It was most memorable as I was so young and had to deal with this at such a young age. Trying to cover or hide the back of my hair that completely fell out and explain to my friends and the mean kids what exactly happened to my hair was very difficult. Even as an adult, I struggled with the use of chemically filled products and the effects they were having on my hair and body, as I was diagnosed with fibroids at the age of 26 and now learning from the recent research and studies surfacing on how chemically filled hair products are causing these adverse health conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancers, fibroids, hormonal imbalance, hair loss, and other reproductive health issues in women, but at a much higher rate in women of color. From the age of 5, I had a love for braiding natural hair as I’d “braid my dolls hair in tiny plaits” as my grandmother would describe. My love for hair continued to grow as I grew older, and by the age of 16, I had a clientele, some of which I traveled to do their hair. Once I graduated from high school, I entered the corporate world, and continued braiding part-time. In 2009, the job I was working at the time funding was cut, and so was my position. I then used that time to attend cosmetology school. As my clientele grew, I started to get clients who was experiencing some form of hair loss. I wanted to give these clients a real answer and solutions which is why I started to study Trichology in 2016. While studying Trichology (the scientific study of the hair & scalp), I became aware of how closely what we put in and on our bodies is related to the adverse hair and scalp conditions we as women experience. As a result, MJB Holistic Hair Care was birthed.
Can you open up about how you managed the initial funding?
When first starting my business, I applied for loans and was denied, even with a 700 credit score and a physical home to use as collateral. I then used my tax return, sold my home to use the equity to help with expenses.!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most effective strategies would be word of mouth. Having clients who are satisfied with your services, then share with family and friends is next level.
