We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Myeka Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Myeka, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success takes time. Even though I’ve been a CEO majority of my life and career, most major things happened years after implementing the idea. I knew I wanted to be a CEO at age fourteen without even knowing what CEO or Entrepreneur meant. What makes me successful today is I never stopped. Even when I didn’t know or understand something. I studied, asked questions, tried and failed. Time is wealth. Success is time.

Myeka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Because I knew what I wanted at a young age, I was grounded in what I wanted and lead a life in that path. Everything I did in life was based on my goal to be a CEO. As a CEO in any industry, you sell the solution, not the problem. My major skill in business and in life is problem solving. Consulting, business, and sales are the three major factors of my business and business mindset. With my skills and talent I can run any type of business and sale any product.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes. I took a career break for nearly a year. I worked for other CEOs helping run their businesses. It was an experience to say the least. For both companies, I was in leadership. However, leadership in your own company vs. someone else’s is totally different. There will always be politics and egos. In that case, learn from those experiences what type of CEO you would like to be. Learn from them what to do or not to do, but don’t settle.

Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
Yes! As a hobby, I ran a retail business. I was hosting an event as a model at a car dealership and I would run into a woman who made jewelry while attending college often. One day, she was in the dealership buying herself a car as a gift to herself for graduation and mentioned she was going to throw away the jewelry left over. I told her I would buy the jewelry from her and that’s how the retail store came along. MJ’s Closet ran for five years.
