We were lucky to catch up with Mychal-Bella Rayne Bowman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mychal-Bella Rayne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Well my parents did a whole lot of things right and I am very grateful! First, they taught me the importance of staying in school, taught me morals, work ethics, & that there is life after acting. They also taught me to be a good steward, be confident in myself, treat people right. Last but certainly not least to remain humble & count my blessings.
Mychal-Bella Rayne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So much! Ok, I am an Actress/Model & a Serial Humanitarian. I got started when I was a toddler. My mom and I were watching The Disney Channel, I said to her I want to be on tv and the rest is HERstory! We started commuting to Atlanta book a few gigs, 1st one was a Disney commercial which we thought was a good omen and decided to go all out. This is what landed us in LA! It was a do or die decision but for us the latter wasn’t an option. We pretty much step out on faith and God provided. We strategized, benchmark & decided to choose quality over quantity projects and til the day those work ethics are still in place with no regrets. If there was a take away from my life it would be to hopefully inspire onlookers to find their innate gift …tap into it and soar! That’s where the MAGIC BEGINS!
My greatest accomplishment to this day was being the ESPN Espys 50th Anniversary Title IV Humanitarian Speaker for Gender Equality. To be the voice of all women at a mere age of 12 was a POWERFUL moment! HERstory was made. EMPOWERMENT resonated all the more that day & to be in the midst of women from all cultures collectively making history is something I will never forget! So much GIRLPOWER & I was there … I am her… TOGETHER WE ARE A VOICE FOR HUMANITY!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an industry kid you know there is a lot of rejection. I truly hope that one finds that way of disconnecting from those no’s that you thought were a yes especially if you gave it your all… with the rise of mental health I believe this a must. And remember there are so many hidden factors that are beyond your control that goes into the booking process so don’t take it personally. Booking the room is the overall goal…leaving a mark that’s UNDENIABLE! Be That & you will always WIN. That is My personal resilience. TO KEEP GOING & NEVER GIVE UP!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My personal mission is the thought that hopefully I inspire someone just a little. If I can get that then its all worth it. It’s bigger than me my mom always says. Yea I know you saying well what about you. My empowerment comes from the fact that a 4 year old me and my mom took a chance and decided to go for it! 1 Golden Globe win & 7 Emmy nomination along with other major award winnings as a cast member of the undisputed Barry Jenkins/Colson Whitehead/Amazon’s “The Underground Railroad” at a mere age of 9 is a dream come true. Not to mention, an Indiewire article sighting my performance as “Honorable Emmy”worthy. I say I am walking in my purpose and it’s affirming. You know that saying “If you love what you do. you will never work a day in your life.” Well I’m there!
