We recently connected with Mya Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mya , thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I believe that timing is everything. I feel if I had started my business any earlier than I did I may not have had the knowledge then as I do now and even when I first started. There is always a learning curve in everything you do but timing also has to be right. I would not change anything about what I have learned or my experience in general. This has surely been a bumpy ride but I have so much pride and passion for what I do that it overcomes all the feelings I may have of not succeeding. So, all in all, starting when I did was perfect timing for me!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure, I got into this business to do something during covid for 1 and I would make candles with my mother when I was younger but out of crayons. I feel it was also a way for me to go through the grieving process as I recently had lost my mom as well. A lot of trial and error and trying to figure out my brand which changed a few times. I always had a similar meaning of what I wanted to do and have my brand mean but I changed the “theme” per say.
I usually think that nothing sets me apart, people are their own individual person and have their own style. This sets me apart, my thought process about my products sets me apart because its my story. No one else can have my story except for me! I am proud of my story, it’s not perfect. It’s muddy and that is the reason I have a lotus flower as my logo as lotus flowers grow from the muddiest waters but they are so beautiful. I am a beautiful human despite my ups and downs and my products are beautiful as they are and with their meaning!
My brand is meant to bring peace to people and let them know that no matter what there is always beauty on the otherside.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Absolutely, most recently on my journey I actually took a hiatus if you will. There is no harm in stopping to re-introduce yourself or having to take care of other things that you have going on. If something is truly your passion it will always be there and you can always start again. I was having some personal issues in my life for close to a year and took some time off, and sold some product and product items so that I was able to stay where I needed to be. I kept going not only for me but my kids and everything I aspired to be. And guess what, that didn’t stop me, and that didn’t stop customers from reaching out and requesting to buy candles from me, if I had the product I made it with passion and love as I always do! That is what makes my heart smile! Bringing peace to the universe and happiness as well. Keep going, keep going!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Quality products, eco-friendly products, I’ve been told that people can tell the love that I put into my candles and other products. I love what I do and it shows! Also, normally when people have questions I am very knowledgeable about my products and what it is that I utilize within it and it shows that I’m not trying to “get over” anyone. I truly care about my products and making them eco-friendly, clean, and smell good
