Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mya Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Getting to make a living out of something that you love is a blessing and privilege that I think a lot of people overlook. This is because sometimes the things that we love can seem so unattainable. That is why I think that it’s very important for us as people to feel worthy of the things that we want. It is no secret that the mind is very powerful and what we perceive our lives to be is what they are. So if we believe that we are deserving of our wildest dreams, then we will have the courage to take actions & steps towards achieving them, and then it’s only a matter of time before we get to where we are trying to go. This is something that I have always wanted for myself and for a moment it seemed impossible. I think that a lot of artists and creatives feel this way. Art is so vast and vague, art could literally be anything and it isn’t always understood. When someone is truly creating they are doing it for themselves, and it’s hard to put a monetary value on that because it’s priceless. Also, there just simply aren’t enough opportunities for creatives, there aren’t enough spaces. Resources are incredibly important and without those it can be more difficult to create, never mind getting paid for it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a singer & songwriter, born in Durham and raised in NC. I have been singing professionally for almost 4 years now although I’ve been singing my whole life. Over the last few years I have recorded and released a few songs and I look forward to releasing a project in the near future. I am not quite sure what my “sound” is yet but I am incredibly fond with genre bending/blending and that is something that I hope is evident in my music.
This past year I have really pushed myself out of my comfort zone as I have been performing almost every Wednesday at the Blue Note Grill in Downtown Durham. Singing live is something that I have always envisioned for myself however it seemed so daunting to me. The thought of going out on a stage and having a bunch of eyes on me was very intimidating to say the least.
The first couple of times I sang at the Blue Note I thought I was going to shit myself. I wasn’t comfortable within my body and so I wasn’t able to truly enjoy myself and let go. My best performances (regardless of whether I hit all the notes or not) were the ones where I truly let go of myself and just felt the music as corny as that sounds. When I really get into on stage it almost feels like a spiritual experience. That is what I am the most proud of right now.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just started taking vocal lessons last month so I would say that one of my goals is definitely becoming an incredible singer. I know that I have the talent but I don’t have any formal skill and that is something that I take very seriously. All of the artists that I look up to and admire are very in tune with their craft and they spend a lot of time learning how to improve upon themselves. There is nothing that I want more than to be able to feel 1000% confident when I sing and to express myself to the fullest extent.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Right now, I am reading “The Law of Attraction” by Esther and Jerry Hicks. I haven’t even finished it yet but it has already proved to be extremely impactful within my life. It has reaffirmed my belief that I can have whatever I want as long as I believe that I can have it. As I’ve mentioned before, the mind is very powerful and what you do with it can make or break you. When I first got the book I was in a really negative and self deprecating headspace. Upon starting the book, I still encounter negative thoughts from day to day, of course, but that’s not the point. The point is to get in the habit of refocusing and reframing your mind to the things that you DO want, not the things that you don’t. It’s like exercising or learning how to play an instrument, you have to be consistent in order to see results.
