Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mya Ferguson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I remember when I moved away from home in 2015 to Saginaw Mi, I went to this salon open house with my uncle. I was fresh out of high school and hair school, I met the owner at open house, we met and spoke briefly. She told me to apply to work there so I did. I still didn’t have my license but I said nothing! I was told how to apply so I stayed up and worked on a resume and made sure I had everything on point! I was so nervous because I wanted this job so bad but wasn’t licensed yet. They had everything I prayed for. An assistant position where you get paid and take hair classes on different days that they paid for, everything. I wanted to grow and learn. Fast forward I go in, turn in my information, then get called for an interview. During the interview I was NEVER asked did I have my license. I guess the conversation was so good he forgot one of the most important parts to working there. Ha! Which ended up being a blessing on my end. I started working there and almost a year in after being an assistant, it’s time for me to get a chair out on the floor. So I get asked for a copy of my license to start taking clients, I said “I don’t have it yet” then proceed to leave to “get lunch” my boss caught me so fast and laughed. I just knew it was over! We go to his office then we talk about why I didn’t have it. From then on he ended up helping me prepare to get my license. From reading off my flash cards when I would do his moms nails, saying jokes that helped me remember the answers, giving me time off, he and his mom pushed me because they saw something in me. I ended up taking the second half of the exam 3 times and passing on the 4th time. It was a huge risk to work somewhere without the proper credentials and possibly ruining a chance to ever get them. But I’m grateful for being a risk taker and connecting with people that saw and see my potential and great work ethic. Which I’ve learned can take you far along with God and favor!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mya Ferguson, I am an entrepreneur. I am a licensed cosmetologist and property investor. I’ve always known I wanted to do hair but never knew I would ever become interested in real estate. I’ve been in business 100% on my own for coming up on 2 years. I offer style, cut, color and some extension services like tape-ins and microlinks. Being an entrepreneur isn’t just about being your own boss. You have to have discipline and go for it even when you don’t feel like it. I love being able to help my clients reach their hair goals. I love being able to help them navigate through their hair journey. I want everyone to know and see my passion through everything I do. I want to inspire others who look like me or have a similar back ground like me that they can do it. When it comes to real estate and working hard in industries we don’t see a lot of people of color or women it’s easy to get discouraged. But there’s so much to learn and gain and capitalize off of. When I see people interested and willing to learn off of what I have to say or know, I’m more invested in helping them to grow as well. I want to see everyone win, it’s fun growing together than alone.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn is their hard may not be your hard. Just because they’ve never seen it done doesn’t mean it’s not possible for me to do it. Also being okay saying I don’t know, but being willing to learn. Being teachable is key in entrepreneurship, really in life in general.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
For me personally, staying true to myself has helped me gain trust with clients and potential investors. Being open to building and growing in new ways. Also praying, and trusting in God and having faith in what he’s shown me is possible through him for me.
