We were lucky to catch up with Mxxnsamurai recently and have shared our conversation below.
MXXNSAMURAI, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is “CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT A VIBE.” Since 2024, I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into this project, recording all the tracks in an empty parking lot. I poured my heart and energy into every note, striving to capture my emotions in the music. Each song is intentionally short because I love the art of crafting concise, impactful tunes.
Even if the album wasn’t perfect, I don’t care about how it sounds. Life isn’t perfect either, and this project is just me being authentically myself.
MXXNSAMURAI, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m “MXXNSAMURAI,” a Filipino bisexual multi-genre artist born in New York and currently residing in Maryland. I channel my feelings through melodies, harmonizing and rhyming as I go. I started making music when I was 16 years old. In addition to music, I also have skills in drawing, photography, and graphic design. In 2019, I created a private Instagram account called ‘moonsamuraiii’ because of my love for the night and martial arts films. In 2023, I decided to launch an account for my music and art under the name ‘MXXNSAMURAI’ which I now use as my stage-art name. I use double ‘x’ in my name as a tribute to Nirvana and to signify my bisexuality, as I’m attracted to both men and women. What sets me apart is my ability to share my energy with the world unapologetically. I don’t care if others judge me—I’m just being my authentic self. I’m indifferent to others’ views; I have a clear understanding of myself. I’m genuinely proud of the projects I’ve accomplished. I want everyone to know that I explore all genres without limitations—I’m just being true to myself. Music has been a steady presence in my life since birth. I started with rock, but in high school, my musical palette expanded to include a wide range of genres.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One book that has significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking is ”The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories” by Tim Burton. It was the only book I read repeatedly during elementary school, and I carried it with me everywhere. The short, impactful stories in the book inspired me to create my songs as concise and powerful as his short poems.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Throughout my upbringing, I faced a multitude of challenges. In elementary school, I dealt with disrespectful kids who bullied me because of my Asian race. I endured heartbreak and misplaced trust in those I believed were friends, only to be deceived and exploited. My musical tastes were judged, I was not taken seriously, and I experienced sexual harassment. People criticized my personality and appearance, judged me for being alone, and spread lies that led to my expulsion from school. My family, preoccupied with their own issues, overlooked my struggles and provided no mental support, leaving me to navigate these hardships on my own. This led to my decision to leave my parents at the beginning of my senior year. These experiences led to PTSD, a lack of trust in others, a tendency to keep myself hidden, and diminished self-confidence.
To overcome these challenges, I turned to writing and making my own music to express my feelings. Music became a powerful outlet for sharing my experiences and emotions, helping others understand what I was going through. It allowed me to be myself and not care about what others thought of me. This creative process has been instrumental in rebuilding my confidence and resilience
