Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mustafa Uygur. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mustafa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Starting a new business is extremely hard especially if it is not a franchise. It was several days that the first customer walked in the store after the business opened its doors. You can imagine how I felt those few days with no customers walk-in or calls. I was really disappointed and thought I had to find different ways to attract people to this new small business, and one of my local friends suggested that I make a deal with Groupon and Yelp as a means of advertising. After working with these two advertising companies for at least 6 months, people started to hear Microfix and do business with you. In brief, I benefited from Groupon and Yelp on a large scale.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I came to the States in 2016 with the intention of getting investor visa. Before I came here, I already had a plan to open an electronics repair and retail business but did not know much about the potential locations and challenging competition that existed in this field. Therefore, I did a comprehensive research while working in a friend’s phone and tablet repair shop voluntarily for 3 months. This short-term experience gave me both confidence and knowledge about doing business here in the U.S. As you are well aware, starting a new business, not a franchise, in a completely new environment is tough and you need all the paperwork done in the right way so I hired a business consultant and attorney to make things easier for me. I have always believed in the idea that if you do your job in the best way you can, it will pay off and get the reward sooner or later. We do not charge our customers at all if they are not fully satisfied. For this reason, we perform our services in the highly professional level.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Repair and maintenance are the types of businesses to which customers always feel committed if they really believe in you and find you trustworthy. In order to make this happen, the most important criteria is to provide the best service and meet customers’ needs satisfactorily. Plus, building customers relations in person is another important criteria. Since the first day, I have tried to create a friendly and professional environment where customers feel themselves at home. Maybe it is wrong but I have always given my phone number in case they want to share their concerns directly. When customers feel happy, they will gladly write reviews and would like to share their unique experience. Those reviews have helped me build my reputation within the market.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
For any startup business, the first three to five months is hardest times and if you can overcome these days, this might be considered a sign that business will succeed. The first month I started my business, it was so tough for me as I had no customers some days and made almost no money. But a month later, I began to make deals with a few advertising agencies and they implemented right marketing strategies. At the end of third month, I was optimistic that Microfix would be among well-known businesses in the near future.
