Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mulah Marciano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mulah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
There’s actually 2 occasions where I knew pursing a career as an Artist was for me.. The 1st time I got high from marijuana, I was talking to my brother but everything was rhyming so easily so I began to write music more often.
My senior year of high school (2011) after I quit the basketball team, I started to tell my classmates that I rap. No one believed me, so I recited some of my lyrics over a couple hit song instrumentals to prove them wrong. I saved up my money and took my talents to a recording studio, burned a bunch of demo cd’s to sell at school and they sold out the 1st day… That’s when I started to really take things seriously.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Niquel Word, but my stage name is MULAH MARCIANO. I am 29 years old from Trenton, NJ based in Philadelphia, PA and NYC! I started writing rap songs when I was in 2nd grade. I remember reciting a song I made for my classmates and they were amazed.. this is where I developed a passion for music. Every year when it was my birthday my big sister would buy me something music related for ex. On my 10th birthday, my big sister brought me a boom box with Lil Bow Wow’s 1st album on tape to listen to. Overtime I started to learn about more artist so I began to save my own money to buy cd’s from a store called F.Y.E, I believe Jay Z’s ‘Black Album’ was the first cd I paid for on my own.
During my senior year in high school at Winslow Township in Atco, NJ (2011) I decided I was done taking basketball serious and began moving my focus towards becoming an Artist as my career. While my classmates were busy trying to figure out what college they wanted to go to I would tell them “I’m going to be famous for making music, I rap…” At the time, everyone doubted me and my talents. I chose to prove them wrong by remixing songs to the best mainstream instrumentals that were released at the time. Reciting the lyrics I wrote day in/day out to my friends at the lunch table started to build momentum on my confidence as well as get rid of their doubts slowly but surely so I took the initiative to save up some money and pay for studio time to record. I brought my written rhymes to a studio called Executive 15 and recorded my first ever mixtape! I brought blank cd’s and covers to burn my music on to sell. I made 100 demo cd’s then decided to bring them into school and sell them for $5 each.. they sold out so I made $500 doing something I love to do.. that’s when I knew I had to keep going!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been to make a name for myself and to get paid to travel/perform worldwide doing what I love along with changing the circumstances that the generations with me and after have a better way of living, especially for my family!
I plan for everyone to know my name and my work as an artist which goes far beyond music. Music is the base for my success, but I plan on doing so much more! I’ve always loved fashion design so i’ve been working on my own brand called Suhdidhe which consists of clothing/accessories.. I currently have bags I’ve made from thrift clothes/recycled denim etc. I also sell paintings on canvas.
With the money I make from my artistry, I plan on investing in stocks, buying land/getting into the home renovation, donating and giving back to my community by creating things like homeless shelter for ex.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When you decide to become an Artist as your career, make sure you are ready to receive hatred from anyone.. that includes the people who made you (your parents), loved ones, friends, teachers, associates, etc.
Being an artist is not for the weak hearted, I’ve heard so many no’s.. so many shows I couldn’t get booked for in the beginning.. it will seem like people make things harder on you to succeed instead of simply showing support. I’ve learned that people will put their own assumptions of themselves upon you when critiquing your career choices… People will tell you-you can’t do something, because they themselves don’t have it in them to achieve the success you’re aiming for. You have to believe in yourself to the point where nothing nor no one steers you left from your desired outcome.. keep pushing/working, because the more you practice the better you become. The more you study the more you learn to maneuver through the industry. The longer you last the further you’ll go just don’t quit!
I remember a time where I paid to record at Repercussions Studio in Philadelphia, Pa.. there was an engineer named Andy Ha who didn’t like how I recorded my music, because at the time I used to try to complete the song in 1 take; if I messed up delete the whole take so I can start over which was honestly stupid and far more complicated than it had to be, but I didn’t realize that until Andy became blunt with his thoughts about it. Andy told me I suck at recording.. he said “i’m not an artist, but I know i’m better than you!” now, if I was to take this to heart I probably wouldn’t have taken it as constructive criticism. He used the rest of my session by teaching me the proper way to record a song; he told me this is how to the professionals do it so I listened and instead of getting angry I tried his way which was ultimately better. Till this day, I record using the method he taught me.. my music stands out because of the technique. I learned that I don’t know it all that day, there’s always room to learn something new. I feel as though it showed my resilience to be the best at what I do.. I’m willing to do whatever I gotta do, no obstacle will ever stop me from getting where i’m headed as an Artist.. the STAR!
