Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Muge Cizgenakat. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Muge, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As a designer and entrepreneur with nearly 25 years of experience, my mission has always been to bridge the gap between local craftsmanship in Turkey and the global market. I focus on showcasing jewelry, accessories, and clothing that are not only handmade but also embody the unique stories and artistry of their creators. This mission is deeply personal to me because I’ve walked the challenging path of nurturing a new brand, navigating the dual roles of both artist and businesswoman.
After gaining over a decade of experience in the U.S. and European markets, I founded Fenix, a platform designed to support designers facing similar challenges. Inspired by the story of the mystical Phoenix—a symbol of resilience and renewal—Fenix is a space where designers who have overcome obstacles can gather, grow, and thrive. It’s more than a business; it’s a collective effort to empower creativity, preserve craftsmanship, and ensure that these stories and talents are recognized on a global scale.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated with a double major in Economics and Business from Connecticut College and began my career in New York, working at a bank for three and a half years. During this time, I rekindled my passion for design, re-enrolling in Parsons School of Design—where I had been accepted years earlier but couldn’t attend due to family concerns—and continued my studies at FIT. With the support of my professors, I founded my company and brand, Muge New York, in 2000.
Donna Karan once shared in a class that DKNY was deeply inspired by the unique energy and support New York provided her. I felt the same way, and that’s why I named my brand after the city. In my first year, I participated in the Couture Show, and one of my bags was featured on the cover of a bridal magazine. This opened doors for me to collaborate with bridal houses, designing bags, jewelry, and hair accessories for brides and bridal models. For four years, I thrived as a young designer in New York, having transitioned fully from banking to building my own business.
After staying 11 years in U.S I returned to Turkey, where the concept of boutique, design-driven products was still in its infancy. I carved out a space for myself in this challenging market, collaborating with major fashion houses and department stores. Later, I opened my own store but realized my goal wasn’t to expand into a chain of stores. Instead, I wanted to create something more meaningful—Fenix, a platform dedicated to supporting boutique designers and artisans.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend my business acumen with my artistic vision, allowing me to connect local craftsmanship with global markets while fostering a supportive community for other designers. I’m most proud of having built a career that spans continents and industries while staying true to my creative roots and helping others on their journey. Whether it’s through my brand or Fenix, I want clients, followers, and fans to know that my work is driven by a commitment to quality, artistry, and empowerment.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation within the market has been built on a foundation of quality, transparency, authenticity, and consistency. It’s essential to remain genuine and honest with clients, as these qualities foster trust and long-lasting relationships. Continuity is also key—not just in delivering high-quality products but in providing exceptional after-sales service, which is often overlooked yet highly valued by clients.
In a world where nearly everything is accessible through social media and the internet, the energy and personality of the creator behind a product truly make a difference. While anyone can produce something, it’s the heartfelt connection and authenticity infused into the creation that resonate with customers. Products with a story, a personal touch, and an emotional depth stand out in today’s market.
I’ve always prioritized these aspects in my work, ensuring that every piece I design carries a piece of my energy and passion. This approach not only creates memorable products but also builds a reputation for integrity and craftsmanship that clients deeply appreciate.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a designer and creative is seeing the tangible impact of my work. As I embark on the journey of bringing my business to Miami, I’ve already experienced the excitement and curiosity people have for my designers. The moment I step off the plane, I’m met with interest—whether it’s someone admiring what I’m wearing or expressing fascination with Turkish culture, often sparked by their exposure to our popular TV series.
The ultimate joy as a designer comes from transforming a vision in my mind into something real and seeing others appreciate and connect with it. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that something I’ve created resonates with someone else, not just as an object but as something they find value and beauty in. That connection between the artist, the creation, and the audience is what makes the creative journey truly meaningful.
