We recently connected with Ms. Kash and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ms., thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I’ve always had a passion for music since I was a kid. Performing on stage in high school is what sparked my interest in taking it a step further. After graduating, it was a matter of finding a recording studio. I recorded my first mixtape song and decided to perform at an open mic show at Club 6 in San Francisco. The rest is pretty much history lol. That performance solidified for me that this is what I’m supposed to be doing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Starting out in this industry was definitely hard. Going from homelessness, domestic violence and a single mother of two children. No matter what battles I faced, I was determined not to give up my passion for music. After leaving Oakland and relocating to Seattle, I started the same process of performing at open mic shows. Those performances connected me with other artists, promoters and producers. I was then able to establish myself in my new location. What I am most proud of was my discipline throughout the process. Being able to balance parenting and home life, but allowing myself to make room to still pursue my dreams.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I remember very vividly my days of being an actual “starving artist”. Days when there was only enough food for my kids. I would go to my room lock the door, pray, cry, but I knew in my heart that it was only temporary. There were lots of times I had to decide between paying for studio time or household items. Eventually I had to stop doing music for a few years to really get my personal life in order. I also passed on lots of musical opportunities that required me to be away from my children. I refused to miss any parts of their upbringing. Eventually things started falling into place and I was able to continue pursuing music as if I never stopped. It’s been ongoing ever since.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when my fans tell me how much of an inspiration I am to them. How they relate so much to what I’ve gone through. Also how much they appreciate my music and relate to it. It’s an unexplainable feeling when your fans appreciate not only your music, but you as a person.
