We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mrinal Bhavsar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mrinal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I grew up in a family that greatly valued passing on culture and tradition to the next generation. My parents started an entire Indian Classical Music School and Non Profit Organization when I was about 5 years old, involving hundreds of people, just so me and my brother could grow up learning, teaching, practising and performing our roots in Indian Classical Music. They showed me that it was a million times more feasible for me to create a career in the creative arts with community. They taught and guided me through the process of creating my own unique lane as an artist, and how I can best capitalize off of it in order to create my dream life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up learning, teaching and performing music, so if not already in my blood from generations of musical talent, I got into it because that was natural to me and my environment. As I grew into my own person I found myself making many intuitive connections from my training in Indian Classical Music to all genres of music including Hop Hop, RNB, Jazz, Soul and Electronic Music. This gave me a voice and a means of expressing myself through music. When I was in highschool I was very fascinated with Live Sound and DJing, so I quickly got myself into working at theatre events and also DJing for parties. Since then, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. I also attended post secondary school to learn more about hoe exactly I can be a part of the music industry, and to gain more professional training in sound engineering, production and the music business. In those years I was able to grow immensely and start to offer my talents to clients in order to create memorable experiences for them. I offer DJ services for parties, concerts and events of all kinds, I also run a studio at which artists can safely express themselves and I help them reach their music goals, and I also curate events to help elevate the artist community. What I think is different about myself is that I have a multidimensional view on music and productions as I have experience with so many different genres and demographics, which allows me to intuitively connect to people very well.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by posting things that resonated with me and what I felt like was an extension of myself, to help new people get a visual idea of what my vibe is. As I posted more about myself, my events and my work, it started to connect me with like minded artists and businesses. Nowadays, social media is one of the easiest ways to connect with a large network of people so its important to treat it like an extension of yourself. If there is something I’d suggest for those who are starting to build the social media presence, it would be to focus on quality content and the bigger picture. Something I always did was maintain a clean and consistent feed with my posts, which I feel creates a more professional impression.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the real life connections I am able to make by following my passion. My art has lead me to meet some of my closest friends with whom I resonate with so deeply. It is very rewarding for me to have had goals and aspirations as a creative kid, growing up to connect with like-minded individuals, and inspire one another to pursue our dreams.
