We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MrCamoFlauge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MrCamoFlauge , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
No one should ask anyone for their support. When it comes to family & friends, they’re like competitors on who have the most belongings. In my culture, there’s always someone who wants to stay on top of someone without that person achieving that same level or even more success. If supporting you help you get a mansion & they paying rent, of course they bills come before you rite.

MrCamoFlauge , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I go by MrCamoFlauge, which is my DarkSide or RastaBurna, which is my bright. I’m from tha 70346 zip code in Louisiana. I’m a songwriter, beat maker, producer, video creator & more. I join in indie music around 2014 with a lot I learned thru that time. I always had my own recording studio but wasn’t using it or making beats at this time. I 1st started making beats around the year 2000. 2016 I drop a DatPiff mixtape titled “Can I Ball”. 2019 I dropped my Souljaz & Souljaretz EP. Which was post to be my 1st album back in 2010. That same year was more successful than I thought but I noticed that part years after. A professional DJ reach out to me but I had to elevate myself at that time knowing the reach. I didn’t really take him that serious at that time either. But that moment made me the proudest knowing my hard work really starting to pay off. You can check out my “All Nite” single or “My Jungle”. Stayed Inside the HIT single that gives the youth reasons why not to join in on street activities. I don’t know how to make a reggae beat at this moment but I make Soulja Mentality reggae type of me also. Soulja Mentality is my original GENRE.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Once I realize I had to start making beats & recording my music like I had learned 20 years earlier. That was a challenging task at first. I had to learn it all over again & I knew that wasn’t going to be an overnight thing. I started with the beats then I’ll do a lil vocal recordings. I had to learn the mixing process on the beats before I move on to the vocals. After my production on the beats got to a certain point, I went on to mixing & mastering the vocals over the beat. It took me about 8 months to get to that point then I just started getting greater each time.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Looking back I’ll say the early stages was most like a pivot. I was paying for songs & videos to be recorded. At that time I was mostly doing what I do & learning. The music I was paying for was free music until I really understood different royalties & how to collect them. Basically I was was investing with no plans on making anything back at that time. The good part about it tho is I still was putting some type of work in. Over time it equals up to how I get to this point & built me to become greater & stronger. I had local shows couldn’t sell a ticket that’s like a pivot at 1st. I overcame the ones I thought was going to support for a bigger reach.
