We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mr.Jay King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mr.Jay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up I was very fond of makeup, clothing and keeping up with the latest trends. I really didn’t think too much of it because it was something that came naturally. I just like to keep up on myself as a person. So I always carried myself in a certain manner but as I became older and I started having kids, it was like becoming a mom was taking up more of my time and eventually three kids in I got in Mom mode. Where I spent more time making sure everybody else was good versus myself. And I really can’t put a date on it but one day I just wanted a change. I wanted to feel beautiful, I wanted to look beautiful, and I wanted to get back to carrying myself in a different manner. So I got into makeup, at first it was just playing in it and adding a little color to my face every time I stepped out but then it got to the point where I really got fond of it and I wanted to do something with it. So a couple of years after my kids got a little older and my experience became better I found time for myself again. I explore a new world and I got into makeup and I loved it. I love making women look beautiful, I know how it feels when you just don’t feel like yourself and sometimes make up just give us that moment of happiness. And don’t get me wrong you don’t need makeup to be happy but any woman understands what I’m saying. That moment of just pampering yourself can go a long way and it can keep you going for the next 20 years. After a few years of having my makeup company & everything running smoothly. I stepped out even further and I started a boutique called Jay’s Boutique. So not only do I give women a hit of confident with the right makeup I also added the perfect styles to make every woman feel beautiful in her own skin. The perfect heels to bring out those pretty toes and multiple different styles of wigs and wig caps they can quickly throw on and have a beautiful professional hairstyle in no time. Putting smiles on people’s faces make what I do exciting.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always been the girl who loves to dress, make up my face, throw on the right pair of heels and step out and enjoy a good sunny day… After successfully getting my makeup business up and running and creating products that fluttered many tones of skin and being happy with the results I wanted to start a new adventure. I love fashion and I love to dress, so why not start my own Boutique. Was something that I thought to myself, so I came up with a sketch and a plan and I went to work. Now I have the opportunity to dress differently, bring out new styles and create a line of clothing for women of many different sizes, in many different fashions. I also wanted Jay’s Boutique to carry everything, I wanted it to be like a One-Stop shop for beauty products and clothing. So when you get a chance visit Mrjayscosmetic.com then you can personally see everything that Jay’s Boutique has to offer from wigs to wig hats (QuickCaps), from heels to shoes, from clothes to jackets, from makeup, to makeup products and all of the latest and updated Fashion Trends at a reasonable price.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first got started I really wasn’t big on social media I didn’t have a page and I didn’t post any of my work or products. But as the business begins to grow and I met new people, professional people, clients, different styles of life and Etc I learned a lot along the way and I always took advice. I never discouraged any advice that was given to me, even if I felt like it was unnecessary, sooner or later it always came to play. So I absorb what I was watching, what I was doing and I absorb what I was hearing and I was always told to stay on top of my portfolio, keep up with my work so it’ll be easy access when anybody needed to view it or if customers wanted some examples. So this was when I created a business page on Facebook and started to document all of my work. At the time I was a makeup artist so I took a lot of pictures of my clients and any work I did and then when I created my own products I start using my products on my clients. Then I was invested heavily on social media. I started posting my clients and what products of mines I was using for them. I feel like nowadays social media is like a big thing especially for small businesses, it’s a way to get around the world in seconds from the comfort of your own home, for people all over the world to see what you have to offer or even place an order if they want, with one click of a mouse while being millions of miles away. I think nowadays it is a lot easier to be a business owner, especially if you have the spunk. Because that’s what’s going to sell your products and get you out there. So don’t be scared to be funny, don’t be scared to be you and just have fun with it. People love real and when you be real to yourself and true to the game everything falls into play.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The one thing that comes to mind is that this Journey was not easy it was a very stressful, draining, long difficult journey that came with many hiccups. But I wouldn’t change one thing, stay grounded on your belief even if you’re the only one who believes in it. Every hiccup will teach you something new, you just have to find the silver lining. The length of your journey may take a little bit longer than the next person’s but that doesn’t make it any less of an achievable goal. And any stress that comes along the way in some way is a valuable lesson, whether it’s to remove or add people, places and value and just knowing that keeps me going.
