We were lucky to catch up with Mouse Rawk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mouse , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
It has been a long road working with spray paint and creating murals and art over the years. I am self-taught which comes with a large trial and error process, so there has been a lot of frustration and success over the years. I learned quickly you must be determined and dedicated to your craft in any medium if you want to make an impact. To make an impact you have to put in the work, push yourself to produce a body of work that is meaningful, keep learning and stay active.
Mouse , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mouse Rawk, I am a Southern California artist based in Ventura County. I have been creating and making art my entire life. Over the last 15 years I have focused more on larger scale projects/murals. My work combines abstract compositions with bold line work which serves as a presentation rather than an interpretation. The finished result is presented in a complex union of colors and layered application that aims for something much more profound than what is at the literal surface level.
I’m inspired by creative expression in the public eye and feel it plays a significant role in every community. For me, it’s important to continue to create a conversation regarding pushing the boundaries of what art should or shouldn’t be confined to.
Balancing family, graffiti and studio work is crucial to my artistic process and everyday life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think one mission I have always set out to achieve is to be different and take chances whenever I’m painting. It’s important to me to present a painting or wall in a unique manor. Creating and presenting an unusual style has always been something very important to me when approaching a new project.
Taking risks and being vulnerable in the creative process is crucial in my personal goals as an artist.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are multiple rewarding aspects of being an artist. Personally, creating murals or artwork alleviates stress. For me, it would be the equivalent of someone going to the gym for a workout. Painting a wall is an example of helping my mental stress while also feeling accomplished after completing the work.
Also, being in a subculture where I have been lucky to meet other likeminded artists who support me has been crucial in my development. One instance would be the support of my crew TGL. This is a creative community who has been incredibly supportive as a collective but also for my personal journey as well. I am eternally grateful to be apart of that movement and look forward to creating more work with them.
