Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mosik Rhymes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mosik, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I had left a previous situation in the music industry in 2016, and had moved country (to Norway) in 2017. I was there for all of 2018 and found that I couldn’t stop the actual act of making music. In 2019 I met a keyboard player from upstate New York, who had learned to play in the Gospel Church. We ended up making an album with no samples, and all analog equipment.
With the level of musicianship I was fated with being around – I realised I couldn’t hang the gloves up even if I wanted to, and decided to go pro at the end of 2019.
I had a great sit down with a top artist – Da Flyy Hooligan – and got a lot of game with which to apply going forward. Myself and two others formed the company “Spinning Wheel Ltd” shortly after.
At that point I just went head first into making product! I had a few hundred demos I had made around that time, and was sat on the basic structure of album mentioned previously with the keys player. That was enough rough/potential product to have in the bank, for me to feel comfortable entering the market place.
Mosik, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My working name is Mosik Rhymes, and my record label is called “Spinning Wheel”. I have been in the industry since I was a teenager, then forming a group in my twenties with some commercial success, to then going solo with my career – launching an independent record label in 2020.
We are in the record industry, so it has always been logical to me that we make physical records. However not all of our products are sold in this format – most releases are digital, with some having CDs, and some still being sold on vinyl.
Being in the creative/entertainment industry as an independent label, and independent artist in 2025 – we now have full creative control. This allows the production and manufacturing process to be as streamline or as intricate as we choose it to be. Our customers and supporters get a unique and unfiltered product direct from the source.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There is a narrative in music that hip hop isn’t music, or further that sampling isn’t creative or lacks musicianship.
I initially worked with people who didn’t really understand the culture that rap music comes from, or where it comes from. I had to separate myself from people with those ideas, and work with industry leaders to solidify what I always felt and knew – the listener doesn’t care about technical prowess. If the consumer likes it and it sounds good, it’s good.
I made a jazz album with no samples, and I’ve made albums with straight loops – both are great in their own right. My personal favourite songs in my catalogue – are the least technical!!!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After leaving the group I formed, which was at the time achieving commercial success – (something quite rare in the industry, especially independently) – I could have easily quit.
But now doing it solo and continuing to grow each year, only death can stop me and even then I now have a strong catalogue which will live beyond me! Creatively I am unstoppable at this point.
