We recently connected with Mosiah Adé and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mosiah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Two of the most meaningful projects i’ve worked on have been SUNNY DAYS STUCK INSIDE and DOUG
both are albums that taught me numerous things about myself and the way i subconsciously perceive all that is around me
SUNNY DAYS STUCK INSIDE, was made during late june-early july of summer 2022! it was inspired by myself and 6-7 others, all cramped in a studio apartment making music for days on end. there were some consecutive days when we never touched grass or felt the sun hit our skin. which was weird because it was a beautiful summer, weather wise.
the sonic’s of the album took on this energy of being cramped but enjoying the claustrophobia.
this project brought upon alot of introspection, however there was a no certain sound TRISTANTHEEND, KINGAYEO (producers on the tape), and I wanted to achieve. the tape ended up being more of a reflection of what we were all going through at the moment. the tape was also placed at number 8 out of the top 30 on a local Richmond radio called WRIR LOCAL BAND SHOW.
the process of creating this piece left me wanting to dive more and more into the art of music.
DOUG, an album by mosiah adé produced by TRISTANTHEEND
was more inspired my the shedding of things that don’t serve you as they once did.
TRISTANTHEEND and I, sat in my living room for countless months developing riffs and melodies that would convey the feeling of letting go to bring in the new. many of these days the mic would be the only thing i would see. this was a tape that was different when it came to recording, it required a lot more vulnerability with myself and my art. which im glad to have experienced. DOUG can relate to many if not all people, because the subject matter of love, loss, and gain is something we’ve all arguably experienced.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
hello, my name is mosiah adé johnson! i was born in Washington d.c. but raised in chesapeake va. My family comes from st croix and puerto rico.
i’ve been surrounded by art since i could remember! my dad was a lead bass player for the band MIDNITE and my mother taught afro cuban dance classes since i was a kid. i remember going to my dads band practices and being backstage at his shows as a kid, seeing what it was like to dedicate yourself fully to your craft.
i also remember being at my moms dance classes, and seeing her fully dedicate herself to her art form for countless hours.
this all ended up shaping who i am. constantly being surrounded by art caused me to take the same path.
now i’ve been doing music for 2 years and have loved every second of it.
my music brings a different sound to the listeners ear.
alternative rap, is what most people call it.
it shows vulnerability, introspection, and truth all wrapped into production that causes one to come back time and time again to fine something new.
it allows one to sink into themselves and all the complexities that come with it. all the way from shortcomings to the things one is most proud of.
one thing that sets me a part is the honesty within my music. i dont hide anything, everything is on the table. i feel transparency fuels
my music and causes the listener to feel they can do the same when it comes to anything they are struggling with in day to day life.
some of my biggest influences are artist like MIKE, EARL SWEATSHIRT, CHIEF KEEF, ZEKR ULTRA, BOB MARLEY etc.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
a partícular goal or mission that is driving my creative journey has to be the acceptance /having compassion for all that makes me mosiah adé. even the parts that are still going through growing pains. even the parts that don’t shine. the parts that i only get to see, the parts that show their faces within my music.
i feel with the compassion and acceptance that i hold within myself i can furthermore have more compassion and understanding for all that is around me. things that are alive or dead. things that i can see but not feel. things that i can feel but not see etc.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
another goal or mission that drives me are the lives of my family and friends. i hope that by me going full force with my art, that my friends are inspired to do the same. i hope that me bearing my insecurities and using them to fuel my art, inspires my family and friends to accept themselves for who they are as well.
i stress this, because i know acceptance of self can be one of the hardest things to do, especially with all the outside influences this world has to offer now a days. that’s why i feel it’s so important for transparency and honesty within my art.
