We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Moses Lopez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Moses below.
Moses , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents gave me the space and opportunity to dream and to be whoever I wanted to be. They did not restrict what I could do or become and have always been supportive no matter what. Tragedy struck two years ago when my dad passed away from COVID due to a compromised immune system after a long battle with cancer. It has been extremely difficult to adjust to the reality of talking about my dad in the past tense, but his memories and love is what keeps me going. I have found healing and comfort in creating content whether that is by coffeeshop hopping and creating videos or K-pop content of my favorite idols or groups or fashion and fitness content. My dad was a self made man who started as a bagger boy at a grocery store and became owner and consultant of his own company. His life is a reflection of determination, grit and innovation that lead to success over time. He had a never give up attitude even till his last breath. He is my greatest role model and superhero. I am what I am today because of him and I hope to make him proud. When I make my coffeeshop or K-pop content, I heal and the pain feels less. One of the reasons I love both being a freelance creative, and a DEI and Program coordinator of HCEP at Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy is that it gives me the opportunity to tell my story and constantly interact will people of all walks of life and to learn from them as they also learn from me. I love to be able to make connections with others whether that is creatively or by impacting policy and creating an inclusive, belonging and community environment at work or everywhere I maybe. Through my creative work I hope to showcase the beauty of the world around us and find hidden gems. I hope to impact the world just like my dad did through more action than mere words. If I can make at least one person smile or feel seen, that’s all I need, it’s everything to me.
Moses , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As freelance creative and content creator plus a DEI and Program Coordinator at Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy , I get to create art and work with people of all walks of life. It’s the best of both worlds especially during what has been a very difficult 2 years since the passing of my dad. I go to coffeeshops to create content as I am amazed of the craft that goes into making really good coffee but also it allows me to heal from my pain and to “deposit” the pain at every coffeeshop or tea shop I visit. It further confirms to me that I am not alone in my pain. Adding on , I also create K-pop content as I have found that some of the lyrics to the songs heal the deepest parts of my soul. Fashion and fitness content are also important as I can showcase who I am with what I wear and take care of my body so that my mom and sister can rely on me for support or whatever it is they need. As a DEI and Program coordinator I get to mentor and journey alongside graduate students and to work to create an environment that allows any person to feel that they are seen and belong. I want people to know that they are valuable and that they matter. Adding on, I want people to always feel that they make the world a better place by being themselves. The greatest gift is to see people thrive and overcome to become the best version of themselves. Everyone brings beauty into this world, it just takes the right person to see at times and I hope to be that person to everyone. We can’t change the whole world but If we can make one person smile then it’s a start. We are one big family after all. If I am remembered as someone who treated everyone with kindness and made them feel seen then that is more than enough.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The passing of my dad has been an opportunity for me to turn tragedy into helping others see the value within themselves and that beauty is everywhere. When a go to a coffeeshop to create a video I think about the work that is put in everyday to create exceptional drinks or pastries and the investment that has been made whether financially, emotionally, physically and mentally. After all it takes a team to make a business work. I want people to know that they are invaluable and matter. It might sound optimistic or simple, but the world needs that especially nowadays. Whether it is coffeeshop or K-pop or fashion or fitness content I want to inspire people to see the beauty in the world around us and to be the best version of themselves. While I continue in grief, I have learned to enjoy every moment even the small ones as life is a gift and we have to enjoy it while we can. I hope that through my creative work and career to bring a smile to peoples faces and let them know that they make the world a better place.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love telling stories through my content whether that is at a coffeeshop or through K-pop, fashion or fitness, that is what is most rewarding to me. If I can make someone feel seen and that they matter, that is more than enough for me. I enjoy doing my creative work and I hope that it allows people to connect and find inspiration for themselves. I want it to be less about me and more about the people that my creative work can positively change or bring light to new perspective. If I enjoy what I do then eventually others will too.
